Location: SW New Mexico | There was a post on one of the WPRA threads , about teenagers , money and and making the NFR.. I believe this could be a good discussion, for anyone aspiring to make it, in the arena, teenager, money, or not...
Here's my 2 cents..
IMO, it isn't the amount of money one has .. I also have seen where people buy the big name horse and the big rig, and they cant place at a jackpot, but they go pro. They are living their dream.
I made my Turquoise circuit finals, and I did it on waitress wages and tips..
I saved and scrimped to afford diesel and entry fees..
I never ate out. Lived on cereal, milk, yogurt, and determination!
I had a fairly nice horse, and got lucky once in a while and placed. I had a camper, and a bumper pull slant load, with a blue heeler in the front seat with me.
I just recently survived a bad time in my life, and feel I am reborn.
I have a nice horse, Brother Dave.., and just bought the rig of my dreams. I have 10 years or so left(I'm 53) and want to pursue my goal, of living the gypsy life.. I love Pro Rodeo.
I will never be a Gold Card holder,that was a life long goal...but life handed me a couple of lemons there(bad marriages) but at least I am trying.
My point to my rambling is.. teenager or not.. If the determination is there, and if one is NOT afraid of working and the sacrifices to get there.. I believe anything is possible!!!!

| Money can smooth the path but it is the heart, determination, hard work, faith, and other positive attributes that will make or break a person. :)
And a fun/good horse to run! (among other things obviously) | |

| I had the dream to make it to the NFR (Just like everyone else) but as Im getting older that dream doesnt fit me anymore. Now that I have a family, I rather spend my time home rather on the road. Ive shift my goals, I want to place consistantly 1D at local jackpots and some bigger shows. When I achieve that I would love to run 1x at the Reno Rodeo during the performance. There are several ways to qualify for that without spending 10 months on the road. Money does help achieve goals quicker but having an honest/trust worthy horse is more important to me and I dont think you have to have a ton of money to find that kind of horse. Ive seen girls pick up horses for under $10k and be very successful in the barrel pen. | |

It's not how much money your horse cost, or the size of the rig, you pull up in, it has everything to do with the size of the heart and try in the rider and horse..
It's hard work to haul successfully.

Location: Northern CA | Priorities, priorities, priorities! My cow horses are my priority and it shows in my vehicles, house, and choice of vacations (or lack there of). I only have enough money to do so much and I choose to spend it on my horses. Some look at it like I am sacraficing many other things, I don't, it is my choice so I don't see it as sacrafice. | |

Location: Texas | money can buy you a lot of things but I can not guarantee you will place and win checks once you get there. LOL. The one thing you can absolutely not live without is the partnership with a horse THAT good, that fits YOU that good. If you have the horse, scrape up the pennies and give it a shot. Even when you buy yourself a horse of the caliber, you better mesh with the horse or its money wasted. You don't HAVE to have a huge financial backing. A lot of it is finding that once in a lifetime horse- sometimes you have to pay up, sometimes you get lucky and find a diamond in the rough. Some people are blessed they have a string of them. | |
