While my horses have always spent most of their time in the pasture, this is the first time I have had them anywhere with a substantial amount of woods. They are on 180 acres, and when it gets hot during the day, they like to hang out in the woods by the lake, and are getting ticks up under their bellies.
What have you guys had the best luck with using, that helps with ticks? right now, I use Piranha. That's pretty much what I've always used (though before I moved we never really had a tick issue, just horse flies), and I just started spraying them down this week, so haven't seen if its helping keep any of the ticks off or not. There's got to be an easier way then picking the little bastards off. lol

I hate ticks! Every spring I have more if a problem with ticks in their ears than anything though. I've had more luck with equispot or any of the spot-on treatments.

Equi- spot!!!! I use it every year, it's great and if I do find a tick it is already dead! I tried using the other spot on treatments cause they are a little cheaper but nothing worked like equi-spot!!

I may have to try that on my boys...I've been kind of leary of the spot-on treatments after my mare had a bad allergic reation a few years back.

While visiting friends in Arkansas, we went to check on horses and throw Seven dust on them. I have never SEEN so many ticks!! ICCK!!!!!

Here at home I use Freedom 45 Spot on. Any of them should work, 'tho I did have 3 or 4 out of 9 horses react to the stuff that had Citronella added to it. The ones that reacted got a large welt wherever the stuff was applied. Since I don't have large animals close to me, the Top Spot stuff works REALLY well for fly and mosquito control...anything that bites them dies. Still have to use fly spray whenever I leave the place...even to ride around my hay field, but where they live is almost a fly free zone.

As far as ticks, in the last few years I have seen a couple....usually on ME...while sitting on the couch. I HATE ticks! Don't sleep for a week after a sighting. I maybe have found 1 dead tick attached to a horse...and hubby wants me to move South..... I don't think so. ( think of the little guy on the left is a tick)

edited to add: I reapply the top spot every 10 days instead of waiting out the 14 days indicated. Start seeing flies after day 10.
