We had a pretty wicked thunderstorm here and knocked out a butt load of peoples power here in the md/pa/wv area. We aren't expected to get power back until the 12th at 11 pm. So that means we can't get water out of our pumps, and they don't have fans in the barn. The barn without fans on gets easily 10 degrees hotter than outside, so obviously leaving them outside is the better option. but they don't have any trees or shade so I'm worried about them getting overheated obviously, and dehydration . I can get a decent amount of water for them from town and will be doing my best for them. Is there anything else I can do that I haven't thought of to keep them comfortable or to keep them from getting sick?

I haven't ever been without power during the summer months for more than a day, or it hasn't been hot like this so I'm kind of at a loss. loosing power in the winter is so much easier on the horses :( i feel so bad for them.

i'm sure they'll be fine, I doubt they will over heat. make sure they have plenty of water in front of them and they'll be ok. I think we forget that they're animals designed to live outside.

Many times our horses stand INSIDE the barn during the heat of the day.....just make sure that you have adequate water supply for them. Your only other option is to get a generator to run power to the pump and barn.

Some places rent generators as well

Your fly sheets do create shade for them.

You have my sympathy! That is a LONG time without power.

Haul water from town - that's your only choice. Your local farm store will have those big pickup-sized water hauling plastic tanks and they are great. If it tastes different, keep an eye on the consumption. Make sure they all have plenty of salt/mineral available to keep them drinking. You can even put a little salt on their grain.

Our horses in the pasture will ignore the shade from trees and hit the highest bald spot on a hill on the really hot days. They'll be fine outside. Just keep fly spray on them because that's what really makes them want to be in a stall under a fan.

Again, I'm so sorry that happened . . . that's awful!
