Location: In Ky following Barrel Races & Walker hounds. | My husband finally got to get his all put together and running this weekend, this thing has been so cool to look at and really sets the yard off. He had to get him some new fish yesterday because the night before the rain overflowed the pond and his 1 and only fish, that we had for almost a year, ended up getting washed out into the yard and dying(major bummer!). He ended up getting 2 small silver dragon scale looking koi, and some small comets. He decided not to bury the pond, he stacked it up with large rocks instead. He even got driftwood and disguised the pump so it looks more natural.
Does anyone have any tips or dos/dont's for these things? I always wanted one when I was little, but we had too many farm cats/raccoons around, his mom had as many as 3 at a time when he was little, but he doesn't remember much about them. Feel free to share any pics of your fish or ponds, were open to new ideas for ours!

Location: In a happy place | I think that is so neat. I have no suggestions. The last place I lived I had an entire pond that was just for my Koi. Then later on I added some to another pond that had catfish and bass in it. My neighbors also had one pond set aside for the Koi. I loved feeding them everyday. |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | I would recommend installing a filter that has a UV light system as well if yours does not. It really helps to cut down on the algae growth. That's the tough part about water gardens/Koi ponds...keeping them clean. Think of it in the same way you would an indoor aquarium. You have to balance the load of organic material vs the volume and flow rate of your filtration system and try to stay on top of the cleaning.
I loved my koi pond in San Antonio that I had years ago. But it is a bit of work to keep it looking great. I built a rock waterfall going to it and that really made for a relaxing spot to sit on the patio and listen to the falling water. And the water fall helps with oxygenating the water.

Thank you TrailGirl! I will mention the filter to him, he is really wanting to keep it as clean as possible. He is considering getting a couple large sucker fish(I can't even begin to spell their real name lol), would they help with the algea also? Or not enough to matter?
I really enjoy watching the fish swim around, they are so pretty in the light! |

Location: A roping pen near you!! | We have one but I can't keep it clear it was clear this spring and we could see our fish but then it got dirty and I can't get it to clear up. We also bought some really cool flowers from Lowes this spring for it, as you can see they really look neat. The pink flower open during the day and close at night.
