I bought a little hollywood dunit gelding (6 yrs old) in the fall of 2013 that i was told was BROKE BROKE..well yeah he wasnt, anyway i rode him all winter to get him that way. I started putting him on the barrel pattern in the spring and then life kinda got in the way, through no fault of his, nor mine. i had to have a new pacemaker in may he got a cold in june and had a cough, then it was sooo HOT in july I did not haul. So in August i started hauling again. we hauled to a few shows and he was really doing well, however typical  he thinks he knows way more than what he does, so i am not pushing him, i am just going through the pattern and making the pattern correctly and letting him gain the speed on his own. by the first of sept i take him to a big show and enter him of 600 plus horses and he wins the 4-d..well i am SUPER PROUD since this is 7th time ever be entered...NOW WHY AM I DEPRESSED??? We were hauling in our Square bales for the year..the 3rd bale i picked up, i felt something go in my back. it felt like stepping on a tomatoe and it squirting out the side..well i ended up in the hospital for 7 days, they finally did a mylegram and said i herniated a disk at L-4 in my back. The drs were i was at were a JOKE, so i got an apt with another neurosurgeon that is supposed to be the best in the state but its not till JAN 23, 2015!!!  In the meantime, i cannot run barrels, and i know my horse is fine, cause i trust my training, but i just hate i am losing all this time with him!!! Has anyone ever had this type surgery before and have you come back after it??? Pain wise, yes the pain has lessened to where i can tolerate it, but i am a big CHICKEN, i dont wont to lift ANYThiNG, not even my saddle for fear of doing further damage to myself, and i guess i am to independent to ask anyone to do it for me..oh yeah and i cannot take the drs dope, it makes me sick, the strongest i can take is BC powder accross the counter..( i could never be a DOPER)

I am so sorry this has happened, but I might be looking for the second best doctor in the state. Personally, I don't think that I would wait that long to see a doctor.

I have a herniated c5/6 my pending surgical date is February.

My saving grace has been butrans patches and lyrica. I live in a fog, and mornings are tough, but the pain is tolerable where I can ride a little.

Something to pass by your doc to see if you could benefit

I had a herniated L4/5 that I waited a year to finally have surgery on, surgery was scheduled within 2 weeks of finally requesting it. I went from totally miserable to immediate relief. It was amazing, I call it my miracle surgery!

Unfortunately, I overestimated my strength and power and while I was moving a heavy tack trunk ended up rupturing that same disc. Now this time I was in a fetal position with spasms wracking my body every ten minutes. I have never ever imagined such pain. I was taken to the hospital where they tried to send me home with Morphine. After screaming in pain all night and unable to crawl to the bathroom I went back. They apologized and operated the next morning :) I had a huge rupture sitting on the nerve.

I am 18 mos out of 2nd surgery and did a 5K yesterday! I can ride and do anything I want, but will never lift or move anything over 50 lbs again. I know when I'm pushing it and will lay low for a few days.

So I guess it depends on where you are on the pain scale, but I wouldn't think you would have to wait that long. Although my dr definitely wanted me to try alternative therapies first (physical therapy, chiro, massage, injections etc).

Hope this helps!

I would try to get in sooner than later. This happen to me, I hurt my back and they talked me into sterioid injections because I wanted to keep on riding. HOWEVER I treaked my back just right and I went from walking with some pain to crawling on my hands and knees! The pain was almost unbearable! I couldn't take the drugs at all, I lived on Alieve. I finally got an "emergency" surgery appt 3 weeks after it happen. After the surgery I was brand new with no problems, I couldn't ride for 2 months which was during the summer. So I look at it this way, if I would have had the surgery instead of the shots (that did not work) I would have been in the saddle 3 months earlier. If you are going to do the shots, you better be careful because it could happen again. I went from crawling to walking in less than 3 hours. I have no regrets about the surgery! Good luck!!
