Anyone have experience with a horse having pneumonia? It's in her lower airway. I had a culture done on the mucous in there and she was put on exceed(by cornell). My local vet says she can only have 2 doses of it(which she's had), but is still coughing. She now says to put her on trihist. Why would trihist help? Anyone have any suggestions? No temp, no runny nose.

I've had horses with pneumonia. I'd just get her cultured again to be safe, she might need a round of Docycycline. As far as the Trihist, horses that are susceptible to pneumonia are often horses that suffer from allergies as well, and once they've had pneumonia, the inflammatory system is pretty revved up. The Trihist would probably work to help with the inflammation response.

Soo, I would get her cultured again, just to be safe, and go from there. Pneumonia can be a really tough thing for all animals, including us! Barrelbasher might be able to add some insight, she's well educated on all things lung related.

My broodmare had pneumonia and was given Exceed. The pneumonia caused her to lose her foal. She never had a cough. The Trihist is for the cough. After the two doses of Exceed she was fine.

I think baytril is probably the strongest drug for this, although I hate to use it as it does have some risks, but when they are that sick it what I would use.

My mare had pneumonia this past summer. We did a tracheal wash and they pulled out some very nasty stuff. The culture showed 4 different bacteria and she had to be on some pretty strong medication for several weeks. Started off with penicillin and gentomycin and followed up with more specific drugs after getting the culture results. She lost a lot of weight/muscle, so she stood around for awhile. We did another round of bloodwork to make sure the infection was cleared up.

When I started legging her up she was still having difficulty breathing. This mare already had breathing issues so I already had breathing meds for her. I put her on Ventipulmin and can't remember if she was on Tri-Hist at that point. What ended up helping her the most was dex.

I can tell you from personal experience having pneumonia.. it takes weeks to feel better once the infection itself is cleared.. the inflammation in the lungs/airways take a few weeks on their own once the infection is gone and then the energy level takes 1-2 months before you feel normal depending on the severity of it.. its a kick in the *ss! Pneumonia can come back if not fully treated so if it seems like they get worse or not really recovering may have to try a different course of antibiotics.. some strains are more susceptible to other antibiotics than some.. and the immune system gets drained really fast fighting it. Keep the stall as dust free as you can may want to wet it down each day.. that'll help w/lung irritation.
