I have a bit that I really like the shanks on them but part of the mouthpiece is messed up, has a crack and I wouldn't want to put that in my horses mouth just in case anything got caught or the crack got bigger and made cuts. It is a gag bit so I was thinking taking this mouthpiece would be easier taking off than a fixed mouthpiece bit. Is there a way I could a soldering iron to burn it off or maybe file it off?

I'd like to try this idea first, if it's possible, before I have to spend my money on another bit.

I understand. I have a bent knock-off of a famous bit but for some reason all my horses love it. I would do anything to save this bit. Look around for a cowboy who also welds. That's my advice.

you can fix the mouth piece, I've done it before on bits that I've loved. depending on the metal the mouth piece is made of you can either braze or fill in with a little weld where the crack is. If you have to weld make sure you have somebody do it with a Mig or Tig because it won't leave much slag behind. Somebody who fixes jewelry is who I would be looking for because the crack on a mouthpiece will need to be welded with extreme precision or welded and then filed and buffed to remove any extra bumps or slag.

I have used bolt cutters to cut the mouth pieces off, then sent to JD Morrow/Carolina/Shallow Creek bits to put a new mouth in for less than $15.00

I send mine to bit makers to replace the mouthpiece.

This way it is balanced
