So I got my horse's SI injected and the vet gave me some exercise instructions which involved lunging wih a surcingle and elastic reins to build up muscles and such.  He also suggested trotting over cavalettis to encourage him to pick up his back feet.  Just wondering if any of you actively vary your horse's routine to address issues of atrophy and stuff like that?  Or do you just ride and exercise?  I guess I've gotten lazy and never thought to even lunge my horse really!

I got those same reins when mine had his SI done.  I break them out every once in a while and lunge him.  Otherwise, I try to ride him in a similar position.  Less work to use the reins and lunge though, lol!

I was told circles are the worst thing for si joints

I was told backing up hills, long trotting, trotting over poles

Agreed, however i could see how lunging would reduce the amount of weight/strain on his back but I think maybe the circles would nullify that. If you vet says lunge then lunge! I try to back up get some hills in work on collection and do some belly lifts and things from the ground, trot poles and other gymnastic exercises to strengthen my horse's core and top line.

i dont do everything my vet says...lol.....and if i had a horse that i was concerned about extra weight on his back then i would pony him, i just find lunging so mindnumbing.......................and i also read an article that said when lunging no less than 2 and no more than 4..................

It was pretty boring haha. I tried to get him to be better about changing directions without chasing him.  He's pretty good at giving me two eyes, but not moving out into the circle again.

I'll see if I can attach the schedule....
