What are y'all's thoughts and advice on re-starting a 15 yr old mare on barrels?

I competed with her in Jr. Rodeo, & then went a whole other route years later.

I am the only rodeo/horsey person out of my friends so it was always hard to know when or where the races were. Now thanks to FB and other sites, I know about lots of events.

I'm getting the itch to run barrels again, but don't know if it's in the best interest of my horse...

If she is sound and healthy, then why not?

I am sure she will have some type of maintanence, but they all do to some extent.

She had some problems with abscesses when I took her shoes off... but now they are back on & she hasn't had any more problems. I guess that's why I'm more reluctant to running her again.

Have her vet checked, and then start legging her up slowly if she checks out ok.

Thanks! I've been recently getting her back into shape... She gets mad at me if I don't work her. She doesn't like to go back to her giant paddock unless I gave her a decent work out... Silly mare.

Like the other said if she is sound put her to work. You will need to give a multi vitamin cause she will burn it up more as she is getting older..not a old horse yet. She will also need something for those joints. Have fun.

Use her and go have fun. Taking care up and using what you have is a great way to start again.
