Before I start, I'd like to say that we aren't selling my free running barrel horse that I've had since he was a weaning YAY!! Hubby finally agreed to sell his mean roan instead, so happy.

Anyway, I've done most of the work on my big free runner. He is (fancy) broke pretty well and is very controllable. We have breezed and flat out ran on some of our pastures, I love going fast and so does he. On the barrel pattern he's getting very consistent and runs 3D times currently (no pushing, very long stride so it's more like breezing then running home). Has ran in the 2D before I became pregnant.
My fear is that I might ruin him if I try asking him for all of his speed; like my hands won't be able to work in time with him or I'll hinder him in some other way and I'll make him sour or resentful of the pattern. We do not do the pattern fast at home very often, once every two/three weeks maybe. I'm afraid if I work him going faster at home to help my timing then that will sour him as well. Tips would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm in the same boat as you! My 5 year old off the track is a free runner to the first barrel then PUSH PUSH PUSH to the other 2. I was scared that with speed my colt would fry. lol SO I have just let him pick his speed and we keep getting faster and faster. Middle to bottom of 1D every time but I don't push to that first barrel. Maybe by this summer. Or I will let him kind of pick when he is ready for that ultimate dash to the first barrel. lol

I would let him pick his speed as long as he's controllable and it's pretty and correct. Maybe bump his speed in stages:

Stage 1--hustle home
Stage 2--hustle after the 2nd barrel
Stage 3--hustle after 1st
Sage 4--hustle going to 1st

I dont think you will "ruin" him by letting him go faster. That doesnt mean really get after him yet. I would just let him pick the speed he wants and its ok to encourage just a little at home. Hes not gonna just poof blow up all of a sudden. If he does something wrong when you go faster, just slow back down the the pace you were at before. But you cant go to a barrel run and expect to go faster than you did at home, then you are more likely to mess up.

The best way to get your timing is to just enter up at the race. You can make all the practice runs at home you want but it's nothing like when they call your name. Pretty sure I've had several horses that could run consistent 17.0's on a standard set in the practice pen LOL. Different story when they call your name and the money is down. There is no way around entering and running. If you look at the majority of the people that do well they make a lot of runs - in competition. If you really need to fix something you could make a run at home, but other than that save it for the race.

Thanks for all the good advice! I forgot to mention before that I cans end him to the first no problems, I know he won't try anything funny, but I will work on the different parts like you mentioned. Maybe try something different every few weeks.
