Well finally happened today....... My old girl thats been with me for 25 yrs developed a fungal infection in her eye and we had to remove the eye today. Breaks my heart for her.... I know she will be better off without the pain and can make it just fine with one eye, but still hate for her to have to go through this.

How sad for the mare, but she'll be ok. We try to make the right decisions for their health and well being and sometimes its hard, but you did the right thing to make her feel better, your a good horsey mom

Heartbreaking as it is, just know that you have done what had to be done. It has been nine years since I had to face the same choice for my gelding. That was after 25 days at Ok. State University with numerous meds every hour on the hour around the clock. He adjusted amazingly well and way way quicker than I did.

My sister had to do the same thing for her old mare. I was amazed at how relieved the old girl acted after the surgery. She was in such pain before but after the surgery you could tell almost immediately that the pain was gone.

Hugs! Your mare is probably quite relieved of her pain.
