Hey y'all, I have never had a horse with ulcers before and I am starting to wonder if my gelding has ended up with them. This horse use to be pretty much bomb proof. Nothing scared him and he handled every new thing like he has done it for years. He has become really spooky lately and shys at everything, really high strung, aggressive towards the other horses (normally the low man). I have not changed feeds in probably a year or more, the only change in anything is that we have been going to more barrel races this fall. We haven't ran hardly at all this year due to work. He use to handle being in the warm up pens just fine with horses passing him and now it rattles him so bad he can't handle it. I have heard about feeding aloe vera juice to help? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Iwould get a tube of ulcerguard and give 1/4 dose daily for 4 days and see if you notice improvement. If you do, then you have your answer. If they stay the same then might look at other causes.

Thank you! I'll try it. If that is what it is do I keep him on this stuff? I am trying to find a reasonably priced prevention.

Then you would proceed to a full 30 day treatment dose of omeprazole while trying to find what caused them. THat way at the end of 30 days you can remove that cause and find a good preventative. I always use ulcerguard however day before, day of, and day after a race/Hauling.

Omeprazole powder and buffer.  I can not mix it any more but you can mix it for yourself.
I have the ingredients that you need .

MVP Gastro-Plex pellets seem to work well for prevention help. You really shouldn't keep them on omeprazole all the time. I only use omeprazole the 2 days before I go to a race, the days I'm at the race, and one day after. And I get it compounded from my vet so it's only $20 a tube vs $36 for UlcerGard locally. Once you take the horse off of omeprazole it's stomach almost backfires on itself and begins to produce more of the acid than needed after being suppressed, so they often get ulcers again right away unless you add a preventative. Keeping hay under them all the time helps a lot as well, or if they can graze all the time that works too. Slow feeders are great for ulcer prone horses. Mine gets them bad enough that they go all the way up to his larynx, and so far this has worked the best for me. The only thing that would cure him would be to stop running him, but I try to keep him as comfortable as I can and still run him.
