I have really been playing with the idea of breeding my mare, since I graduated college (this week!) and will be transitioning into a new career and not a whole lot of time to run. She is just "middle of the road" when it comes to her papers, but she has so much grit, and is the most consistent horse in this area! I would be so happy to run a colt out of her, so not necessarily looking for resale value. Would you breed a mare like this? She may not be papered to the hilt, but her all business style is such an attractive quality. I'd love opinons.

I can't find a decent conformation pic to save my life, but this is her.

I would say if you like her then breed her to the best stud that you can afford.  You think that you will want to keep the baby but you never can tell but it doesn't hurt to add some resale value.  The better the stud, the better the colt.

I agree with getting the best the most you can afford. Don't be afraid to include, booking, collection, shipping fees all contracts are a little different.
I am super critical of my horses conformation- I pick my favorite aspect and make sure the stallion will still compliment that (love my horses neck, but still will not breed to a stud I think ties in poorly) I also pick 2 tings I'd like to improve & look for a stud that stampsthe trait you're looking to improve.
Side Note- None such thing a too much research, but remember for a keeper go with your gut while remembering the difference between 1250 & 2500 is nothing over the lifetime of a horse while HUGE diff3rence in caliber to stud

Yes I would.

My mare doesn't have anything spectacular for bloodlines. What she does have is a serious want to to please, serious grit, has done anything I've asked of her, doesn't have perfect confo but isn't a train wreak, and an amazing work ethic. I have a major sinus infection and can't breath right now so what I just said may not make sense. Lol

I bred my mare to Howelling Corona and I couldn't have gotten a better minded baby! He is even grittier than his mom and has an even stronger work ethic. Unfortunately I'm battling back issues and if I don't get some relief by Spring I may be putting Ace up for sale. He is FAR too nice to be side lined with me! I am toying with the idea of breeding my mare to Perks Firewater Flit come spring with the hope that within 4yrs (when that foal would be 3yrs old) that we can find a way to get me relief and get me back to racing. Of course none of those thoughts are set in stone.

Just a few things to consider....
Unless you are definitely sure that you can give the foal a forever home, and pay to have it trained (if it turns out that you have no time to do it with the new career) I'd say not to breed.

The horse market it tough. And, saturated with mediocre-bred horses. You are definitely rolling the dice that it'll end up on a meat truck to Mexico if you ever have to sell. Even well bred, well trained horses end up like that.

Not to mention everything that can go wrong with a maiden mare. Every year, I read a story of at least one brood mare who died giving birth.

If you are keeping the foal, go ahead and do whatever you want. Personally, though. I would wait until you know you are ready for one, and have the time to start fooling with it, and buy a well bred weanling.

If you're keeping the foal, why not?
