I currently live in Oklahoma and am thinking of relocating to Colorado. I noticed on here there are not many races to go to. Is this how Colorado is? What part of Colorado would be best? Would like to be within 30 min of mountains. Also please tell me just how bad winter is. Thank you!

I have never lived in a rodeo state like OK or TX, but I have never felt like there weren't enough barrel races. On the front range, you can usually find a race every weekend. I would recommend living within 75 miles the Denver area because that is where you'll find the most races and horse property without being too far away from everything else going on. With that said it is difficult to find horse property in or near the mountains on a budget if you stay close to Denver. It may not be ideal, but I recommend going east of Denver. Before we moved, we lived in the Hudson-Keenesburg area. We bought a nice 3 bed 3 bath house with a 4 stall barn, a hay barn, a shed, an arena and 2 reasonably sized paddocks for 300k and we were about an hour away from the mountains and 40 minutes away from Denver. Before that we lived in Bailey, which is in the mountains about the same distance from Denver. We payed 600k for a huge but outdated house on 6 acres with a small hay barn and absolutely no workable land because the hillside was so steep, and it was extremely difficult to park our trailer.

As for the Winter, it is different depending on where you are. The mountains are pretty snowy, but not a ton of extreme weather and I'd say most days are between 20 and 40 degrees. The plains get less snowfall but more wind, and blizzard type storms, temps are about the same. Winter tends to be over pretty quick, and weather changes very quick.

I've lived in two parts of Colorado, east of Parker/Castle Rock area and now I live in the south side of the state, about an hour from Pueblo. There's races everywhere but they're stretched thinner in the south part. Every race is about an hour from each one, or more. And there's about 20 girls that show up, not counting youth. Closer to Denver there's more races closer together and more associations. Mile High is a great association and there's a lot more than 20 riders, more like 200+. Plus there are indoor and outdoor arenas closer to Denver, but in the southern part there are one or two.
If I could I'd move back up North just for the races BUT I despise snow and the cold lol. Plus it's cheaper to live down here and I'm not a fan of the city in any sort of way, I just wish the races we're a little closer.

Anywhere that you can see those mountains, you will pay dearly for that view. The cheapest you might find for a house and small acreage will be around $350,000 and up. Plus everything is expensive.

I grew up in the mountains. We now live out on the plains. We are 30 miles from weekly jackpots in Akron. We are about 100 miles to the foothills. Land and the cost of living is much cheaper because we don't have a mountain view.

The app Run Barrels Now has most of the CO jackpots listed.

Burns Ranch Arena in Akron has jackpots every Tuesday night and just about every weekend. It's a great place to season a colt.

Spicer's Arena in Ault (just outside of Ft Collins) has jackpots every Thursday and run almost every weekend in the winter.

WK Atena in Ft Lupton runs every Wednesday in the summer.

Mile Hi runs in Castle Rock, Loveland, Arapahoe County (Aurora) and Adams County (Brighton) year round at least monthly if not more.

Hadley Arena in Canon City runs about every other month.

True West Productions run about every month at Boulder County (Longmont).

Plus there are races down south around Pueblo.

So while you might have to travel a little longer, it's pretty easy to find something year round if you really want to go.
