Have a horse that had thrush and bout got that cleared up is sore in front feet but has always been in shoes and have been out of shoes for a month. He is sore from his soles. Does keratex really work? He is good in boots but I cant really work him in boots. I know that there is a transition period but still want to make him as comfortable as possible
thanks

My husband recommends Durasole to his clients whose horses have thin soles. Itโ€™s a blue liquid that can stain your hands if you donโ€™t wear gloves, but you use a toothbrush or similar brush to paint the sole of the hoof, and it toughens them up quick! We are seeing a lot of thrush, thin soles and white line disease up here right now due to all the wet weather we have been having.

Per a Farrier recommendation, I pulled shoes on my horse and applied keratex per instructions (I think it was everyday for a week, then every few days after that).

I ended up dealing with multiple abscesses on 3 of her feet and was unable to ride for a long time. As soon as I could, I got shoes back on her and sheโ€™s been sound ever since.

Keratex helps harden soles by drying out but it won't fix thin soles. The only thing that will fix thin soles is hoof growth. I am assuming your horse has very thin soles which caused him to bruise and abscess.

:(. Not the case. She had a vet check in March with complete X-rays, and the vet notated that she had a lot of sole....and great feet.
I have a thread on here somewhere about it when it started (June or July?) happening. Many looked at pics and suggested I switch farriers. I did, and am so thankful for the advice I got here! :)
My horse before DID have thin soles, so I was ecstatic when the vet said hers were great!

ย  perhaps there was a different reason he abscessed then? Or did your vet blame keratex?

Oh MY APOLOGIES - Iโ€™m not blaming the keratex for the abscesses. She abcessed we THINK from being barefoot and having little โ€œthingsโ€ (could be dirt, gravel, blades or grass or hay or WHO KNOWS) migrate up her freshly bare feet.
Iโ€™m just stating that I started using keratex the minute her shoes were pulled, and used it religiously for a couple of months. I never noticed it making a difference. But certainly didnโ€™t cause abscesses. Sorry about the confusion!
