I recently aquired a mare that is fabulous, shes as honest as the day is long and worth her weight in gold. She just hasn't been clocking like she "use" to. We recently discovered that she does have navicular syndrome in her hind feet, this came after I aquired her. I took her to Dr.Jaci (Outlaw Equine) and she is the first vet who really was able to pin point the mares lameness that "low". The previous owners had scoped her for ulcers, bleeding, injected SI, WhorlBones, Stifles, and Hocks. I was told shes 100% sound we just cant get her to clock like she did before we got her. But, this mare was clearly 4/5 lame on both hinds after flexion exams and we did have to LOW block both hind limbs to get even a small change. So, that was a start to at least have a definate "heres your problem" diagnosis vs This perfectly sound horse went from 1D TO 3D in 6 months.... 

I opted not to inject her Navicular Bursas and I brought her home. I had my farrier reshoe her as she did have a broken angle in the hind end (she is cutting bred and stood up like an old fashioned bay mule). So, we dropped her heels a little to improve the coffin bone angle. 

Our vet who works the feed lot gave her Osphos, and we started her on equioxx. She is already sounder IMO after the shoes, and equioxx. Because prior she was very very rough to lope (like a washing machine with the comforter off to one side or a truck with a lift kit and blow out LOL, clump thud clump thud) you get the point....  I dont think the Osphos has had time to really make a difference (yet). But, the shoes and equioxx have clearly evened out her gait and made her a much smoother rider. Ive got a pretty good feel and prior I assumed she was just short, and choppy... I had never had any previous experince with her to go off of, but now she at least feels like all 4 tires have air in them... 

I am wanting order Equi-Bone for her, as I have always heard its great for navicular. But, I have had several people recommend O.C.D. Pellets. 

I am hoping someone here has actually be through this, and has experience with either supplement. (Please do not suggest NRF2, this mare was on it with the previous owners, they send her with half a bottle, and it unfortunately didn't help her in the slightest)

Also, if you did chose to use OSPHOS how long did you wait after administering it before you injected the Bursa? Or did you not have to? 

We used Equibone with no results...but maybe we didn’t use it long enough??....that was several yrs ago...injected a mare with osphos 2 years ago and shes done well with shoeing ever since.

I would recommend giving the osphos at least a few months to work before just adding more. I run with several girls who do the osphos every 4 months & they will all tell you to give it time. They all said it was a couple months before they saw a change after the initial injections. None of them inject the bursa or coffins either. I have one with navicular that is fine with just corrective shoeing, but if he progresses I will add osphos & that will probably be it. 

I am glad we chose to do the osphos. Just seeing the x-rays there isn't a lot going on, the coffin bone was at a really bad angle causing part of the issue. There was some minor changes but nothing that was a "THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM FOR SURE"... So, I figured Osphos will take care of a lot. We treated my mare with Kissing Spine with Osphos last year came back 90 days and re administered it, and she has been a solid year without a back injection and sounder than ever. Its crazy what that drug is capable of.

I tried both osphos and equi bone with no results. Just didnt help my guy in the slightest. 

That is discouraging. I am already seeing a change in this mare, with shoes, equioxx, and the Osphos was not that long ago. I am hopeful that she'll have a much better quality of life, we have already ordered another vial of Osphos to give in 90 days. So, I am not giving up shes so honest and wants to work. I would maybe feel differently if she didnt want to do it anymore. 

I think our game plan is to start OCD Pellets November 15th, and in 90 days we will do a second dose of Osphos. If we aren't 100% sound in the Spring we will inject her bursas. But. I am going to give this 6 more months and know that bursa injections are an option if we cant get her sound woth shoes and therapy alone. 

I never noticed a difference with osphos and both the osphos rep and the vet said they really thought I would and he was a great candidate for it. I was bummed. Special shoes and keeping him on a strict shoeing schedule have made the biggest difference
