| http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brLhC9GJuME << yesterday. I was proud, still a bunch to work on. But today, was back on the barrels after a little over a month. She wasn't rushing, or chomping/pulling through the bit. This, was actually the best work out I have ever had on her. I put her on oats and she is now on a jointsupplement too. I also switched her bit to a butterfly bit and she seems to like it.
PLEASE crit if you would like..... I know we have tons more to work on. Im not asking for a pat on the back 'oh you did well'. I really wanna know what more we can work on.
Btw sorry for the music and partial clips, I had to mash it all together and people were talking. |

Location: N Texas | I'm not that great at critiquing, but I do have a couple of comments. At around 57 seconds, it looks like you came in right at the barrel without much of a pocket, causing your horse to go wide on the backside.
I'm also not a fan of circle, circle, circle the barrel, unless the horse is not listening at all. If she makes a good turn, then go on to the next one. She also looks like she's having trouble getting her body to follow her nose. Check out the "bendy horse thread".

I did as a re-watched it, its a habit that needs to break. I was circling off and on, and not fully on the pattern. Because she seems to listen better then going around one and knowing to shoot for second right away. I just thought that going around one, it'd be random because she wouldn't know when I wanted it. |

I do not like when I go into a barrel and the horse is speeding up in the turn as in my experience this leads to problems later on.
I like my horse to rate when asked shorten their stride not their speed and keep the shape and distance all the way around the barrel.

I watched the video again, how broke is this horse, as at the beginning she stuck her nose up and ran off a little, it also doesn't look like she moves her front end off of the leg, it is looking like she is just following her nose.
I would suggest getting her more broke and trying to find someone to ride with to give you pointers

Location: WYOMING | Looking super broke in her face which isn't a bad thing... but... here is seems that is getting in your way some in the turn. It looks like she is getting behind the bit a smidge and getting heavy on the front end in the turn. I sure like one broke in the face but not for one to carry themselves like that all the time, only when I ask for it. I want to be able to pick them up without over breaking. Thats the only thing I see that MIGHT rear its head with speed, but then again it might not! LOL!
I had a finished reiner that I had to "ruin" cause she was too broke and wadding up in the face but once I got her picking her nose up she got more balanced in her turns.

| Try staying at a consistent speed. One exercise I like to do is trot/lope a large circle around one barrel, about 20ft. When the horse feels comfortable and relaxed. Ill ask him to lope a smaller circle around the barrel (8-10 ft) then move on to the next barrel. I usually ask for the small circle once. This helps the horse track its feet. |

Agree with this, also there were a few times when you would get half way through a turn and let her stop working and reward her. IMO that is going to teach her that she only needs to work the first half of the turn.
Work on nice, even, circles. Coming into the barrel nice and tight does you no good if you can't maintain it and blow out the backside. Coming in a little wider and maintaining that position all the way around will be faster and easier on your horse.
