I saw a picture of a hackamore with a chain noseband, no rubber or anything around it. It seems pretty severe to me but I'm genuinely curious as to why a horse would need it and how it works on a horse.

I like the JD hackamore with a chain link nose. I have mine wrapped in black electrical tape. It's really not as severe is people would like to think. The chain conforms to the shape of a horses face better than rope does. I've never seen the hair on a horse's nose get rubbed raw with chain like I have with rope.

I agree, the rope is more severe, I like how the chain forms to the horses face. But it just depends on how the rider handles the bit or hack, a bit or hack can only be severe if its handle wrong.

I use a clampitt hack and a jim warner, both have different style chain nosebands. I have a layer of vet wrap over them simply so I don't have to explain to everyone how mild they truly are. People see them & assume they are harsh. But the chain conforms to their face and is actually very comfortable for them.

Hmm well I can see what you all are saying how the chain conforms to the horses nose.

The chain is less severe because you have more contact on the nose than you do with a rope. Try poking your self on the nose with your finger tip then conform you finger around your nose and do the same thing. The PSI is lower with the whole nose being pushed on rather than in one spot.

Just like a chain mouthpiece, some like it better.
