My one mare gets very little winter hair. I had a medium weight stable blanket she would normally wear but I bought a turn out so I didn't havd to worry about her getting stuck out in a snow storm. Now she is extremely sensitive over her withers. I tough them and she flinches her skin and pins her ears. But no hair is rubbed off? Should I leave it off and just keep the other one on. Our weather is supposed to lighten up now. But we were in the negatives most of the month

Is there anything I can do for her now? If I'm able to leave her big blanket off how long is she going to be sore. I was hoping to ride since it's going to be nice this week.

After this year I am not blanketing anymore (unless ice/frigid below zero temps.).  Seems to not be "natural" to the wither/mane area to me.  I would rather see them furry and not sore.  I would take it off.  We warmed up to the 40's for the next couple days and mine are off...

Im not one to blanket normally. My gelding is a wooly mamouth. I kept her unblanketed until we got in the negatives and I could tell she was cold. Hopefully the weather holds.

I would suggest speaking to your vet about antiinflammatories, and getting a massage therapist out to work on your horse to speed up the healing. I would also suggest getting a blanket with a higher neck and one that fits her better.
