| How much Pentsosan are you giving your horse? I just recently started giving my barrel horse the loading dose. My vet told me to give him 8cc (he is 16.1 and roughly 1200lbs). When I have asked other owners they have told me only 5 or 6cc. How much do you give? |

| How much your horse should get depends on how much your horse weighs.
The dosage is 3 mg/kg IM ~ If your bottle of Pentosan is the 250 mg/ml concentration, you calculate the following:
A 1200 lb horse = 544.310844 kilogram horse
That horse would need 1,632.933 mg of Pentosan.
There are 250 mg per mL of product.
1,632.933 mg
________ = 6.53 mL of Pentosan product from the vial is the dose your horse should get.
250 mg/ml
Round up to 7 mL and you'll be fine.
This is why its important to have an accurate weight of your horse. |

| I give 5cc weekly to every average sized horse I have that is running. I think the dose it around 5. something or close to 6cc but I'm giving it so often I think they are doing just fine on 5cc. It appeases the OCD side in me and lets me use an entire 50cc bottle without having weird amounts left over lol |

| How much is costs per week (or per injection) depends on how many mL's you give and what the bottle costs.
I paid $85 for my last bottle of 50 mLs from Wedgewood (I got lucky and they were running a lower price special).
$85.00
_______ = $1.70 per mL
50 mL
My horse gets 6 mL per dose * $1.70 = $10.20 per injection
He gets monthly injections after the "loading" dose of 1 per week for four weeks.
I think the "regular rate" for Pentosan from Wedgewood is about $110? I think.
So that would end up being $2.20 per mL

I pay 125 for it from my vet (she is compounding it with Acetyl D) for 50 mL.
125/50 mL=2.50 per mL
2.50* 6 mL= 15$ per shot.
15*4=60$ per month if I do it every week ($2 per day). Realistically, it's comparable to the higher end oral joint supplements in price per month (even with giving it weekly), and often it is less, like if I am not running that week. In addition, I have seen better results with Injectibles than I have with oral joint supplements.
Plus, I have been able to stop doing IA injections for the time being. I may still need to get his hocks done after winter, but so far so good (knocking on wood).
I will note I would not give this to a bleeder, a horse that is going to have surgery, or one with liver/kidney issues. But mine is not in that category. |
