Anyone have any experience with hempen -dfc horses? Are they hot, or have any quirky characteristics? Considering a 3 yr old and wondering about their disposition. ...

I personally have never owned one. Let me re-phrase that. I have never owned one for more that 24 hours lol. I've heard from a lot of people than they can get hot. It doesn't take a lot for them to throw a fit. Once again, I've never personally worked with one. But the few I've seen, have been known to get "angry" quickly. I think it takes a certain type of trainer/rider to be able to click with a DFC horse.

I LOVE the Hempen lines. One of my very best horses is a grandson to him and I can't tell you how gritty and cool he has been (and sound) for several years. I have a colt right now whose sire is by First Down Dash and out of Hemps Folly, his dam is by Streakin La Jolla & out of a Sold Short mare. Smart colt, willing and has a nice mind. I bred to his sire because of the Hempen on him. I have another from the same sire & out of Judge Cash mare coming mid March. I don't have an issue with either line, or the combo of them. I know Hempen's can be a bit quirky by I seem to get a long with quirky so I don't worry to much about it. The biggest thing I've found with mine is that they don't want to be picked on, show them their job and then let them do it. My current good horse's sire is by First Down Dash & his mother is by Judge Cash. Love him to pieces, would take a barn full. He can get upset, but I think it is a product of his upbringing. Love both of my boy's to pieces and I never find DFC or Hempen to be a turn off for me.

I have a broodmare that i have raised alot of babies from and she is amazing. She can be quirky but i like quirks. She was hurt as a yearling so was never rode but she sure puts some "umpfffff" in her babies.

My blaze faced sorrel, Clifford, has Hempen on his papers, and my gray has Dash for Cash on his. Clifford is fractious and goofy at times but a total sweetheart and ridiculously talented. He can win the 1D or completely break the pattern because we're still figuring out how hard we can run at the first barrel and still be able to turn it. I think he's going to make a whale of a rodeo horse in a few more months because he can stand up on anything, he handles mud and he's not any more loopy at a rodeo than at a barrel race. LOL. Cliff is my small pen horse and he's finally getting to the point where we don't crash barrels 70% of the time indoors. If he can dial his brain in enough to make good runs in the big outdoor pens, I think the sky is the limit for him.
Chance, my gray, is more established as a 1D/rodeo horse though I honestly don't think he has as much pure talent as Cliff. Chance has always been calmer and better-minded than Cliff. He also has an ego and runs way harder in the performance of a rodeo than at a jackpot or in slack. He excels in big pens with loud crowds and nice ground though it doesn't have to be barrel racer groomed.

Depends on how close up Hempen is and what else us in the pedigree. We had a syndicate share in Hempen so I've been around a few. Great horses. But they weren't for everyone. Super smart, but they could be pretty temperamental. Not the type of horse you want to pick a fight with. My daughters good pro mare is by Takin On The Cash and out of a mare that is a great granddaughter of Hempen. Most people would have blown her sky high. She's super talented and super quirky. She is a diva. But she has a great work ethic. She just has her own idea on how things should be done. You can look her up on allbreed. Take The Cash Quick.

This is mine. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/mega+hempen I would love to find a hempen grand daughter. My gelding is just now finally doing decent on the pattern at 17 years old. We found out that he had a cracked tooth that was causing him to run off with me all around the arena. He only is running in the 4D a big shows but I'm just letting him get the pattern down smooth before I start pushing him. He is definitely a free runner. He has had a hard time learning how to rate. Maybe one day before he is to old he will run in the 1 D. He definitely has the speed. Mine is only 14.2 or 3 with long legs and short back but he also has a short croup so he will never be able to drag his butt. I would take another. Mine would have been a great cross on dash ta fame or firewater flit.

I have no experience with hempen but there was a son of DFC that stood not far from where I live a few years ago. I have ridden several of his get (all out of different mares). Ironically the stud was named TH Saint...the horses I have ridden by him have been anything but saints lol.

While very talented, they are quirky. They are really quick, really sensitive and reactive. Not very user friendly.  You can't nit pick with them and really do have to pick your battles, they are not forgiving. My gelding is named "ice" because he really is 'ice cold' he doesn't like people in his space, doesn't want to be loved on and is very wary of anyone he doesn't know.  You have to watch him at jackpots because he really detests when random people walk up and pet him...he never has done anything but I can always feel him grind his teeth and flick his tail. He's just that kind of horse. He also needs a good warm up or he might just kick up his heels instead of run.

For all his quirks, he is very talented. The more runs he makes the tougher he gets, he loves a short go.
