Location: Gainesville, TX | So on most of the posts about conformation everybody talks about wanting low hocks. So how exactly do you define that personally. Pictures to demonstrate your idea of an ideal low hock to illustrate would be great. Finally do comment on whether you think 16 hh + horses can have low hocks. I think of it as a proportion thing but at a certain height due the benefits begin to disappear?

Location: home for the winter...what a dumb idea | I don't have pic but when looking at a horse standing on level ground the hocks should be no higher then the knees preferable lower. A tall horse is naturally going to have hocks that are higher then a 14h reining horse. How ever they still should be proportional to the knees and rest of the body. |

| A tall horse can have low hocks, my gelding does and he is a ass dragger. When you ride him set down in saddle and he drop his ass and slide. |

Location: NC | 'low hocks' does that mean short cannon bones or does the shape of the actual joint come into play? |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | It's about the ratio of upper leg to lower leg, mainly cannon bones, but pasterns play into it some too. My most talented horses have had very low hocks and knees in proportion to their height, but the Jet of Honor horses, for example, are known for having their hocks up by their butts and are still talented horses. Different turning style tho, as they tend to be front-endy, and conformation is probably why. |

Look at the length of leg above the hock vs. below.
