I'm looking for a really good trainer that starts colts in CA. I have a 2 yr old gelding that is a barrel prospect that I need to get going. I want a trainer that can put a good handle on him and get him broke. If anyone knows of a good trainer please let me know...
Thanks

Casey Branquino in Santa Maria area. I think he specializes in starting colts to be barrel horses

Cole Hook in Red Bluff. He pretty much starts or tunes up everyones colts up here. Gets the right amount of handle on them for barrels, gets them desensitized and they get rode 6 days a week.

I use Mark Warrack in Agua Dulce. He has started 2 for me undersaddle, no complaints really. The first went for 30 days as a 2.5 yr old stud colt. I had done most the ground work up to sitting on him, Mark was able to get on him the first day I dropped him off. I picked him up after the 30 days, gelded him, kicked him out for winter, rode him myself off & on thru his 3yr old summer, kicked out again 3yr old winter, and at the beginning of last year (2014) I sent him back to Mark for another 30 days and asked him to haul him along to ropings for me, and he did. I also sent him a mare who was coming 8yrs old, had been raced as a 3yr old and then kicked out to pasture for 4 years. Again, I had saddled and been on her before sending her, but he put 30 days on her as well. Depends on the horse of course and how long you're looking to send them out, but I defiantly won't hesitate to send him another. PM me for his info it you'd like!

ETA: His horses spend alot of time tied up, which I think is a plus for hauling purposes. Also helped with the above mentioned mare and her hesitation to load in my 2 horse straight load. :) We were hesitant to send our horses out to a trainer due to bad experience. But we went back after a week of my colt being there, he was out in the round pen, walked right passed us and went to Mark, I'd say that was a pretty good sign.
