Location: Riding or working in Texas | I would like any information that y’all may know about what causes this? I have googled and asked my vet, I just do not feel like I have found any answers :( My mare recently had a still born foal and this was the cause of death. I am now struggling with weather I should breed her back to the stud or just give it up. This was her first foal and she has no line breeding or anything to suggest any birth defects. I have also spoke with the stallions owner they have never had this problem, he also has no cause for congenital defects.. My mare gets top feed and is better cared for than my kids ! Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Location: Carpenter, WY | I'm so sorry...I have no experience but sometimes sh!t just happens. We had 3 mares year before last with problems I had never heard of before. Lost one of the foals but they all bred back just fine with no problems and all had healthy foals the following year.

| so sorry for your loss. from what I understand it is excess cerebral spinal fluid and ultimately causes too much pressure on the brain. it is not hereditary that I know of just a congenital freak thing. I believe you would be okay to breed back but I could see why perhaps you wouldn't want to. my heart goes out to you. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | I went to a LeeAnn Rust clinic and she talked about how she had to put down a foal due to birth defects. People told her not to breed that mare to the same stud again but she did and got Harley, her NFR horse. Sometimes crap just happens and we will never know why, I wouldn't give up yet. Sorry about your foal, hard to explain how attached we get to those little guys before we ever even see them. |
