Expert Posts: 1520 Location: Illinois	I give mine in the morning and usually again at night on race day because mine gets them so bad. I'd say morning is probably better for dosing once a day

The lectures I have attended have been saying this is the better route to prevent ulcers.

How much do you give of milk of magnesia We have equine choice up here which is milk of magnesia, the directions are to give 30-60 ml 20 minutes before

Expert Posts: 1520 Location: Illinois	generic liquid antacid for humans with magnesium (maalox) works to coat the stomach, won't prevent or heal them. Just neutralizes the pain. Its how many vets recommend testing if you don't want to spend hundreds getting them scoped. I give 30cc about 2 hours before and another 20cc 20 minutes if I don't have omeprazole on hand. Mine spits half of it out which is why I give him an extra dose.

Veteran Posts: 113	You are wasting money as a pre-race fix. Omeprazole takes a few days to work. So if you're not giving it daily, it's pointless to give a boost before a show. Things like ranitidine work a lot faster for temporary relief. I learned this from a GI focused vet.
