Tendon injury..has your horse ever came back from it?

3 months ago, my gelding ripped both extensor tendons on his back right leg. He has had the surgery to repair them, and just got his cast off today. As I was unloading him off my trailer, I went to unhook him
(remember he's been in a cast for 3 months
) and he was just gonna back a little so he could turn around and when he did, he felt the pain of his leg and started freaking out, as he tried coming back forward he couldn't lift his ankle up
(because the damage of the tendons
) so he freaked out again. After calming him and assuring him, he tried again, this time he got turned around and I didn't let him come out yet cause I was freaked out as much as him so we sat there for a second. But as he turned around his foot completely folded under just like the first day he got it hurt, and he couldn't lift it up. After we got off the trailer he was still shooken up a little and started walking a little better. I know the tendons aren't heeled yet, and he's not used to being able to walk on 4 legs again, so that may have a lot to do with his ankle folding under.. but has anyone ever dealt with torn tendons? Has your horse came back? If so what discipline? Did you get the surgery done? Does your horse have any other problems with that leg? I've never dealt with anything this bad and just wanting some input and best advice. He's only 3 so he's got his whole life ahead of him and I don't want him to become a pasture ornament. Any advice is appreciate.. No rude comments..Thanks!!

All you can do is turn him out for a full year and then evaluate his injury again ... most will make a light riding horse if left alone to heal ...

I had one that tore ligaments in a front leg. She got her foot hung in a tree that had fallen. I watched her do it. It took about 18 months. Dont make the mistake I did. I turned her out in a sandy pasture thinking that would be helpful, it wasn't. After I brought her back to the barn where there is no sand she recovered quickly. It is big still, but is sound.

He's still recovering from the surgerys and will be in a stall for about 2-3 more months

I have a gelding that tweaked a tendon and bled on the inside and he has been on stall rest for three months and the vet said he would be completely sound.I can go back to riding him in about a week but only at a walk for thirty minutes a day for a month and then she would check him again to see how he was healing and after that we will see about how to bring him back up slowly.

Laser and equivibe boots. I would ask and see if you could wrap with runners relief. Also cur Ost supplements such as the plus and immune might help. Go to second vet.com. Dr Schell is always good at answering questions. Magna cu wraps would also help speed the healing.
