| I have a horse that hasn't been using his hind end, any helpful tricks?
He hasn't been engaging it like he use to, and I'd love to find some more drills to really make him less heavy on his front. Thanks!

| Very broke, he's been trained in reining for a couple months before started on barrels, he's been seasoned now for a year consistantly and runs in the 1D.
I've got him ciroed, xrayed, and messaged, so I'm fairly certain its not pain.
He just doesn't do like the sliding stops, doesn't want to spin much anymore.
I feel like it's partly me not knowning the correct cues, so want to learn some drills to really make his hind end work. |

| If he isn't sore at all, I'd be willing to bet that he just hasn't had to do the reining commands in a while so they're getting dull.
My mare gets like that sometimes because I'm bad about not making her use her reining background very often. I make her stop a lot and back immediately until she starts backing up before I have to tell her to when we stop. I work on rollbacks and ride more with my body than my hands. I put her in an o-ring and only touch her face AFTER I give the command with my body if that makes any sense. Like I'll ask her to stop with my body and voice and then I'll apply pressure on her face so she associates the command more with my body than her bit.
If you're really having a tough time with him, try to find a reining trainer in the area you can take a couple of lessons from.

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I've had a couple that just weren't naturally "hind endy" the biggest part of that was how they were built, conformation wise. Do lots of backing, even on the ground. A good foundation starts on the ground, i make my colts back soft, supple and easy before I even ride them. Fence work helps too. But, some just aren't naturally on their hind end! |

| Stop nagging the horse and get out of the arena and do your legging up
riding relaxed in the pasture .... horse already knows the pattern ...
As you know a horse can read your mind ... so stop the ....use your rear end
thinking.... and go riding ... |

I have two that don't use their butt. A 4 year old just started and an 8 year old that's a free runner and gets strung out around the backsides. I work them on the fence and do a lot of roll backs. I also do spiral circles (large to small, small to large) around a single barrel both ways until I feel them correct through the turn (shoulder up, giving to the bit, back inside leg up under them). Also I back my horses ALOT! Not just 4 steps or so but maybe half the length of the arena. |
