Location: Muskogee, OK | I am going to be working up some ground at my house for an arena- wondering if anyone has any advice on the best way to do this? Our plan is to use a box blade to disc up the ground- after we have the soil worked up what is the next best steps? It's a fairly flat area that we are starting with.
We live in east central oklahoma, not a ton of red dirt where we are it is more of a darker grey/brown soil. What is the best type of sand to bring in and how much? It is not going to be a huge arena- tops 100x150 ft.
Also, any make-shift arena drag ideas? I've seen chain link fence used before with something heavy on top. We actually have an old disc but it is needing some work before it is useable. |

| Your using a boxblade? never heard of doing that, you must have super soft ground. Anyways, I usually just disk mine up about 4 to 6 inches and then use a piece of chain link fence with a piece of angle iron on the front to kind of pack it back down and smooth it out. I cant tell you prices cause Im sure they are different there. Just ask someone that hauls it what kinds they have, you need one that doesn't have much clay, like riverbed sand? that's what they call the good sand around here, it is the lighter colored sand. |

| I thought box blades just scraped them flat and hardened them?? Are you talking about using a Tiller with a case around it??
Around here, there's a couple ways people do it. Usually they use a disk or get a farmer to rip it then they disk it, and then use a harrow to smooth it out. |

| If your ground is like mine, and I'm in Morris, be real careful with the depth. More than 2-4 inches can get really loose in a hurry. |

Location: Muskogee, OK | Thanks for the responses everyone.
Our plan was to use the box blade first to "rip" the ground up. As far as the sand goes, what is the best way to "mix" it all together (for lack of better terms)... We have a tractor, box blade and farming type disc (small). |

Thanks for the tip! I have a feeling our ground will be this way as well. Did you add any sand to yours?? |

| I finally gave up and just ride on the grass. Hubby was having a hard time with depth control, and since we don't "need" an arena right now we kinda blew out of. I'll holler at my neighbor and see if they trucked anything in. Her's is fabulous. |

Yea, if you wouldn't mind asking your neighbor whenever you get a chance that would be great! |
