I have a mare that grunts when we lope, if u put your foot into her during the lope she grunts more, she is pretty free so I usually don't have to keep her moving but she will still grunt. I have assessed all pain issues with my vet, and she's sound as a whistle. She's young and a catty mare, can sometimes have the mareattitude, have never had one that grunts lik this before - anyone else have a "grunter"?

She yawns a lot when we ride and sometimes clears her threat so I'm wondering if maybe a breathing issue or allergy? She doesn't get winded fast though and recovers fast after a hard workout.

I do!  Mine is a mare, too.  I think mine is more of a "protest grunt."  She only does it when she is asked to do something she doesn't really like, for example, backing up more than 10 feet or so, she may grunt then, so it is pretty obvious she just does it to protest.

I used to own one, she was built like a barrel with legs, as wide as she was tall.  Her first job after she was broke was cow work and eventually was used when they had to rope bulls.

The man I bought her from said once he got a rope on a bull she would squat down and grunt...that bull wasn't going no where with that mare on the line.

The only reason he sold her was she was too short for him.  I bought her for my husband as she was/is truly a bomb proof horse.  My girlfriend now owns her and she trail rides her.

My mare is a grunter...I too think it is more of a "protest grunt" because she does it about the same place/time on our ride. It is kind of funny!

I have a "sometimes" grunter lol  my gelding doesnt do it under saddle or while being worked. He does it when hes fed up with the flies and everytime he stomps his feet he will grunt. (hes also a diva i might add) He does as if hes saying, "ugh mommmm, get these things OFF of me"  hahaha

Mine will grunt sometimes.  He's a gelding.  He'll grunt while stomping at flies, which now we have shoo-fly boots, so he doesn't anymore.
He'll grunt sometimes when I threaten to thump him with my feet when he's being lazy.  I'll throw my feet way out and he'll jump and grunt, but I don't even kick him.

My gelding does "long" grunts when he pees .....   it's quite comical.

I'd say if you have everything checked out and she seems to be working fine, she may just like to grunt.

My gelding grunts when I ask him for the first lope of a ride.  He does it maybe 4 or 5 times - I assume after that, he has accepted defeat
