Curious right now.  Looking for opinions on a good cross for a Strawflyin Buds X Strawfly Special broodmare.

PYC Paint Your Wagon, if you can still get the frozen sperm. I have had a few crosses with Strawfly Special on the bottom (favorite mares!) and now one in training who is by PYC, and I can't say enough good things about him!

I have a Strawflyin Buds daughter that we've gotten 3 foals out of. The oldest and best, is 9 and was sired by a local cowbred stud. Her next we bred to Epic Leader. She had a beautiful gray filly who is now 5. By far the tightest wound horse I've ever been around. Sooo athletic but the most anxious horse ever and has to be handled with super kid gloves. The last foal was a colt by Blazin Jetolena who's now 4. He is a different creature also. Gets scared and blows up, Full on frenzied bucking like no one's business. He was sent to a colt breaker at 2, which in hindsight was too early for him. He came home and hasn't been ridden since. No way can I ride his blow ups. I am in NO WAY blaming these stallions because 2 out of 3 have been difficult and all 3 foals have different sires, so clearly my mare is the issue. A friend of mine said he had always heard the Strawflyin Buds were difficult, but not sure if that's truth or hearsay. I'd just really do my research before breeding. I'm NOT breeding my mare again.

What is your mare like and how is she bred on the bottom?  This mare is super nice to be around in temperament, was a decent solid barrel horse as well.  She does have a tendency to internalize but never to the point I found it to be much of a problem.  I believe though it could be reason enough to be very selective on a cross if I do breed her.

I believe Strawfly Special was a leading broodmare sire at one time. Love the PYC.  Thanks!

She's out of a thoroughbred mare. She ran on the track and earned an ROM so was granted full papers after that. We bought her after she'd been through a couple of owners after her track career. I ran her on barrels a while, she never had much rate so that's why I bred her to those stallions. She would get pretty nervous at shows, but I chalked it up to flashbacks from the track. She may very well get it from her TB side. I just have no desire to deal with her foals any more. She is absolutely the best mother ever. I'm sure your mare will be fine, it's just not a bloodline you see often and I was going to mention my experience. Good luck with your baby!

I really appreciate you sharing.  I am hesitate on breeding this mare because like you I am not sure about dealing with another foal and I certainly don't want to invest in a breeding that doesn't work.  Tiny's Gay which is on the bottom of Strawflyin Bud has never been a breeding I have liked very much.  When I bought her I was buying a barrel horse not a broodmare.

I had a daughter of Strawflyin Buds out of a Rare Form daughter.  I bred her to Triple Vodka and she had a beautiful colt. Unfortunately he got injured and had to be euthanized as a yearling.  I had already sold her at that point, and I believe her new owners have bred her twice to their son of JL DTH... She has one colt on the ground from that and is bred back.  Had I kept her I would have wanted to cross her on something FG.   She was insanely talented, like, the fastest horse I had ever ran. She wasn't the soundest but I got her later in her life so idk what happened to her from her track days or whatever. I miss that horse every day!
