Location: Missouri | I will be graduating in May with my OTA degree and I was just seeing if there were any fellow therapists on here (I may be the only one). Also do you work full time, part time or PRN?

Location: Missouri | Woo! I'm not alone :) so nice to know some fellow COTAS and OTRS are on here! This is my last academic semester then this spring I do my two Level 2 8wk fieldworks. I am going to a SNF and inpatient at a local hospital. I haven't gotten to see any SCI, TBI's or CVAs yet in my fieldworks so I hope I get to. My dream is to work prn and do my business on the side so I can fit in time for races. But I really liked the SNF I was at this semester because it was higher paced than my community mental health setting.
Do you feel as this career works well with races, riding etc?
And assistive tech- I had that class last semester and all we focused on was switches :/ never even touched the ipads and looked at low vision on the last day.
Nice to meet you all! | |

Location: MI | Congratulations! It depends on what setting you work in as to how flexible the weekend schedule and everything is. I work in an outpatient department, we do not have a weekend rotation. My boss also rocks, I could work a few 10s or less hours more days, and he would be ok with it. (our department is myself and him, lol). In the SNF, I was in a rural setting and the only OT. There were some weekends I had to cover for therapy, but, it was good pay! In outpatient, I've worked 8-4:30, 9-6, and 8-6 4days a week then half day fridays. Schools are nice because you get the 'school' hours. Etc....I love that there are so many settings that can be worked in, it makes the profession a lot more flexible hour-wise, interesting, and love that I can work just about anywhere.
I'm sorry that your AT class was a bore! That's not cool. Really, now it's more just about accessing technology in general. We do a lot with mainstream technology, sometimes I feel like I work in IT more than AT. Switches aren't even used much anymore, it's all about direct access, much quicker.
Good luck on your fieldworks!

Location: MI | I think PRN as a new grad would be hard. It's doable, but not ideal, and I'll be honest, I'm not sure if most management would want a new grad as PRN right off the bat. It would also greatly depend on the setting you are looking at. Acute care and SNFs would be easier than peds, which I could pretty much guarantee wouldn't have a PRN opportunity. Have you looked into traveling? They pay really well and you'd get more of a variety of settings, but for a longer period of time so that you would have some mentorship. Or even thought about part-time?
My first job was as the only OT at a SNF in TN. I'm pretty sure I was the only OT in the county, lol, it was pretty rural. I worked with a great SLP, and a few good PTs. It was a good experience, but I wouldn't succeeded without the team. I did leave for a while to work outpatient peds in a place I could be mentored. That was an invaluable experience.
