I just purchase a gelding that has not ran the pattern in at lease two years. He has been at a jumping/pleasure barn. They straight up told me they know nothing about barrels other then pattern. Has been used as a lesson horse for everything. What is the best way to get him back running good again? I m sure he hasnt forgotten.

I have always been one to buy the ugliest or skinny horses.. I always try to see potential down the road. This one is no different little under weight in my book and is perlino...not the prettiest thing right now

Just go trot the pattern. You'll know pretty quickly how much he remembers and how he was trained.

We have bought a couple horses for my youngest brother that had run barrels at the horse show/playday level and even years later they had no trouble remembering where to go. All we had to do was fine tune their pattern and figure out how to ride their style.

My barrel mare hadn't seen the pattern, or even an arena, in about 6 years when I got her. She hadn't been ridden but once in 2 years and before that she had just been a trail horse. I just started with her like she was a colt. She remembered a lot but I did slow work with her to fine tune her and mostly just get to know her. I

I bought a little mare over the summer . The people told me that she had done everything and was a nice barrel horse but hadn't been used for anything other than trail riding in years. I rode her for a while to see what she knew, she had a few little quirks but was a very well broke mare. I put her on the barrels one day thinking that she had probably just loped through at some little horse show and that would be all she knew. She didn't like slow work and would get pretty grumpy about it so I turned her loose and dang she is nice. We just started entering this fall and winter I think I have ran her only 3 times and she has been hitting in the 3D with a little room for improvement. So just take him out and let him see the pattern you should know pretty quick if he knows what is going on. I have been having a blast on my $300 find .

Thank for all the advise. Im sure he will surprise me. They told me that the young girl's dad that previously owned him had said how much money he spent on barrel training for this horse. A little slow work goes a long way..

Also would like to find out more info on him..I will post some pictures soon but he originally came from az and them move to ohio. He is around 15.2 hands big boned perlino gelding. I was told 11 years old but no papers..

Nice gelding. Put some weight on him, see how broke he really is...start him on the pattern slow and get with a good barrel trainer.

I trotted the pattern once and then sent him off at a lope.  I could tell once we started loping that the rope horse we bought definitely knew the pattern.
