When you want to start hauling a horse to rodeos do you like to throw them in the perf right away or slowly introduce them by entering slack?

It all depends on the horse for me and if I'm willing to lose some $ in the process. I have one that I want to get rodeo seasoned this year. I can't haul often so I've picked perfs. I lost my butt at two tour rodeo's and the three smaller rodeos I've entered on him. But he's gotten valuable exposure. I think if he wasn't on my schedule he would be shining by now. I did an ammy rodeo the other night and he rocked once in the arena but as I was approaching the alley the barrel truck was coming out with high powered "take down" lights on. It scared the he
(*&
(& out of my horse he ran backwards from their blinding influence and it took me 30 seconds to get him composed and walking back up the alley. I dislike a horse that false starts so I was glad that the announcer was on the ball and explaining that I was getting my horse mentally prepared to do his job.
I had a horse several years ago that really required the slacks to make $ and get his confidence. I had to have the pickup men or a judge walk up with him when I first starting entering the perfs or he was the devil to get in. Once he locked into that first barrel he became golden. That horse however several years later took a terrible fall at the first and just disliked his job after he broke his neck. He had a year off and mentally never came back.

I usually start them out by loping through in the perf at a muddy nasty rodeo. Not really by design, but it seems to happen that way with mine. Chance's first rodeo was in the perf in knee deep mud and he has always done better in the perfs, but that's fits with his show off personality. Clifford ran in the slack his first rodeo but got thrown into a perf the next weekend on nasty slick mud. I think his first two perf runs were in the mud in fact.

Thank you for the responses and 'votes' in the poll! You confirmed my beliefs. I was planning on starting with entering slack but wanted to see if that is what the majority did as well. I have a 6 y/o mare who is very honest and knows how to safety up on ground she's not comfortable on. She's very honest and focused and wanted to enter her in a couple of rodeos and she how she does. Might wait til next year, but am starting to think about it

Do you get to choose whether you are in the slack or perf?

You can always request the slack. Call early enough you might make the performance.

I prefer perf hands down. I feel like I ride harder and better. My good horse I sold was the same. The louder and wilder the noise and crowd was the harder he ran. However, now I have a very hot blooded colt and I think he needs slack for awhile until he gets the hang of things. I entered him in his first perf the other day and it was a very large crowd under lights. He completely missed his first barrel but his next two weren't bad at all and I couldn't have asked for him to be any better. He just needs lots of hauling.

It depends on the rodeo association. I have my United Rodeo Association
(URA
) and Interstates Rodeo Association
(IRA
) cards and the URA says that slack after a performance cannot be requested, it must be a drawn
position, but the IRA I believe will allow you to request slack at their first approved rodeos. There are some contractors who will accomodate your request for slack or perf in order to help out contestants but not all are willing to bend the rules like that. It is very helpful when they will work with you so you can make more than one rodeo in a day and not have to choose between all the good ones that are close to home.
I've never bought my permit so have no idea how the pro shows work with perfs or slack.

for pro rodeos, when your still on your permit its hard to get into a performance so I always just plan on the slack, now once you filled the permit and have you card its a little bit easier to request a perf
