Wondering if anyone else has encountered this. I just bought a 6yr old gelding about 2 mos ago, he's out to pasture with my mare and 2 other geldings during the day....just yesterday I came home and he's got a chunk of hide out of one of my other geldings butt, and then he mounted my mare!! I'm like what? I double checked underneath to be sure he's gelded. I only have 1 pasture for my horses with an automatic waterer..we don't have acres of land. I'm upset and going to leave him in his stall tomorrow now, I'm not sure what to do? Do mares come in heat every month year long? I was thinking only spring/summer...anyone have this problem?

Yes! We have a 22 year old that must have been proud cut. He can not go out with mares, think goodness I don't own any, any more. He can't go out with one of the geldings, because I thought he was going to kill him one time. Running him with teeth gashing. Caught him in the back. Mind you the other horse has been here for years. But, all the good ones, usually have something that you just deal with

It's really not that unusual. That is why a lot of people don't pasture mares and geldings together. At the very least, the geldings can act like idiots. At worst, you have situations like yours.

Just because you can't see the family jewels under there does NOT mean he's a gelding ;)

My first order of business would be to make sure he's not a Cryptorchid.

We pasture mares and geldings together year-round. We've had a couple over the years that will mount a willing mare and some that just drop down when a mare is standing. In our pastures, once they get the pecking order figured out everyone gets along okay. However, we have had one gelding in the past that was downright dangerous. We turned him out and he gathered up the mares and would charge the geldings from across the pasture (a 100+ acre pasture). We gathered him before somebody got hurt. I'm pretty sure we had some bloodwork done to see if perhaps he was proud cut, but that came back normal. We eventually sold him to a home that didn't like mares so wouldn't ever own any, with full disclosure about his behavior.

I had a 32 yr old Arabian with spinal arthritis that would mount a mare when she was in heat bad enough. Poor sucker fell off and laid himself flat out on the ground one day. I had to give him extra arthritis meds the next day! Determined! Lol!

Not uncommon. We had a gelding growing up that was proud cut. He was a handful, but one of the best horses ever!
Last fall (September 1) when we moved, my husband's former employer gave us his ranch gelding. Went all last fall and winter with no problems. Spring hit and we have a new mare that was given to us that is VERY herd sour. Now the gelding has to be kept by himself cause he was mounting the mares. He is still pacing the fence so I tried to put my other gelding in with him and he about killed him. He still has scars from the bite marks. So Original is still by himself....

I had a gelding that I was trying out for my daughter. Look out the window one day and it's a Harlequin novel in my pasture!!! He was sticking anything that was standing still long enough. Great to ride, had a great handle on him. But we decided to pass on him because he was scarring up my mares too bad with love bites on the withers and beating up my old gelding pretty bad.

We have a gelding who, in all other situations acts as such.....EXCEPT..when turned out with mares he will breed them. His physical anatomy is that of a true gelding and my husband swears  there is no way he is proud cut. He doesnt act "study" or anything ...I guess he's just romantic?? lol!
