How would you treat a slightly runny, sometimes goopy eye?  It dries out, so it's not continually running.  Appears to be from wearing flymask/wind/fly irritation.  There was a hardened yellow eye booger this morning which had me a little more concerned....  Suggestions?

I have one that has that also. I chalk it up to allergies. I keep her up during the day and a fly mask on when she is out to pasture. That does seem to help. It's not bad enough for me to put her on antihistimines.

One thing you can have the vet do is flush the puncta (little hole where tears drains through to the nose .... just like in a human essentially), just to make sure it is open and not clogged. Tears and gunk will build up faster if it can't drain out properly.

The first time I ever saw this done, it made my eyes water.....

Yes, the nasolacrimal duct might be clogged.. the other thing I would do is take and have that eye stained just to make sure there isn't an ulceration on it making this happen.

^^this!^^
I thought it was just wind/dirt but the next day took him to the vet. It was a fungal infection and now he has only partial sight in that eye. It started as a plain simple runny eye, then it was a little goopy and by the next day he was at the vet.

Ditto, had one with same symptoms, had local vet out, she said probably just a scratch and gave me an ointment.  The next week the other eye started the same symptoms, thought no way he scratched both eyes so took him to a better vet.   He had an infection, lost the sight in the first eye but saved the sight in the second one.

I used vetricyn pink eye treatment. Cleared his eye right up.

I had a filly that did this, a lot. If I remember, she was a long yearling or maybe 2YO and she was very gangly and I was having trouble getting her weight to keep up with her growth so between the 'junior' formula grain and and extra 36% protein supplement I was giving her, it turned out she was getting to much protein. I cut back on the Protein in her grain and it cleared right up. I had taken her to a vet for this and the vet told me it was her confirmation and that her glands didn't drain correctly and she'd probably always have watery, goopy eyes. I didn't believe that and so I started thinking about any changes I had made and that is when I realized it all started when I added the protein to her diet.

I had another horse that ended up with uveitis (moonblindness). His eye was a bit runny and the color would change. The first vet cleaned his tear ducts and gave me an ointment and she claimed it was all caused by his small tear duct glands. He didn't get any better and I took him to a vet that specializes in eyes and she diagnosed him properly and gave me the correct meds (turns out the ointment from the first vet was actually making the problem worse and advancing the disease more quickly). Here is the vet who saved his sight: http://www.clevelandequine.com/subpage.php?page=cumming
We had to take him to see her a couple of times and spent well over a grand, but it was worth it.

Make sure you are going to a reputable vet.
