Any ideas a good bit for a free runner for more control especially on the first barrel? I use a thin snaffle with rope nose band and he is powering right through it! I don't want harsh just something to get a little more leverage to rate him better at the barrels. I can school him in a snaffle but in competitions he is all power!

Look at the million dollar bit, if that's too much, dutton makes some combos with shorter gag too.

I use a jim warner hack. Love it. I use a snaffle at home but the hackamore gives me the control I need at competitions.

I use the Ed Wright Pretzel bit on my free runner. It works well. When I first got him, it seemed like it scared him but now it is a good bit for us. You also might try a regular Chain Mouthpiece bit. There is one made by Molly Powell or there is a Petska version that I like.

You should look at the L andW bits. they have some combinations I think would work for you.

I solved that problem several years ago by using a steel nose tie down set where my mare would hit it if she got her head out of position at the first barrel....she was very strong in the alley and to the first barrel but needed to know when I cued her to set, that if she stuck her head out to run thru my hands that she would hit the steel nose band, and at that point, I could put her butt in the ground....I used a Goostree Delight (mule mouthpiece, hard side down) bit, always cued the same by saying whoa and sitting down before I ever took a hold of the bit in order to give her a chance to do the right thing.... And NEVER letting her over run the first barrel....I really had to slow down going to it at first, but the tie down allowed me that control over her speed....With consistency she caught on fast and within a year I didn't need the tie down and turned the bit to the easy side..... Every horse is different....this is just what worked for me....and she developed a super first barrel and never went back to over running it, even though she was still strong in the alley.... Hope this helps.....if you live near me, you are more than welcome to borrow the nose band and try it....
