Can I see your wash rack area??

I am wanting to have a little slab poured just outside my barn where I'd have easy access to the hose and the water could drain off the side of a hill and not make a muddy mess in their lot.  My husband suggest just getting large sidewalk stones and laying them close together and saving money by not having cement poured..... has anyone done that?  How is it working out?

We have an indoor wash rack that both of my horses hate standing in. both of the prefer to be washed outside... (shame on you if you was them with a different hose! grr!) We have a faucet outside on the edge of a small hill so I was them there and let them graze since there isn't a place to tie them. the water absorbs into the grass or drains down. either way it works for us. (they do have to suffer if it's wet outside, so I don't have to slop around a muddy grass area.) I'll upload a photo for you. The onnly issue we have is that the drain is a nightmare. constantly clogging. Someone put in a shower sized drain...

previously we've had busted cracked concrete with a boom and it was a mess.

I plan on in the future getting rubber pavers on top of a lime foundation. That way it's nice and even with no slip. and the pavers are replaceable if it gets ugly!

We have 4 barns where we are at and each of them have 2 wash racks in them.  One each end. They are inside, concrete and mine has matts in it. They have drains in them for the water to go. I can take pics tonight when I get home.

Thank you both!!  Mine will be outside as that's the easiest place to cement some pipe in (I have a gelding that will set back) and the best place to allow the water to drain "naturally".

CI, I am really liking the idea of rubber pavers!!

If you're talking about the large square cement pavers, I don't think it'll work. The weight of a horse standing on a corner, with wet ground underneath, will probably not hold up very long. If you put heavy mats over the stones, it might work if your horses are very well behaved. I have one that will pull every now and then. I know it wouldn't work, he would tear up something like that. I have a crosstie made with two telephone poles four feet in the ground, cemented in and a concrete slab. He can't move any of it when he pulls. I didn't have a wash rack before that and it was a huge inconvenience. I love having a place I can clean their feet and bathe them without ending up in a mud hole.

Thanks! It cement pavers probably wouldn't work then. He will pull back if he gets the urge to. I do plan on doing matting on top just so it's not hard concrete as I will use the area to tie him while I saddle (right now he's tied on the inside of the fence and I have to carry my saddle over the fence to get to him).

I have one like you are wanting. Except It's asphalt instead of concrete. Never had a problem. We didn't put in a drain just let it run off. We used 2 light poles with a thick chain and bull snapper on each one and a 2x4 across the front to keep them from going forward. Unclip the lead rope, Snap to each side of the halter and as long as you halter fits he can sit back all he wants. He WILL NOT go anywhere. Believe me. My gelding tested this theory many many times.

Mine is between a fence and my tack room so they can only go so far. I just move with them.
