Subject: Ideas for hocks/ body sore mare

A little background info - she is 14, hasn't been ran in 3 years (due to time off from alley issues, then having a foal)... We are slowly starting to bring her back to barrels and I have been legging her up since january. So she shouldn't have too many reasons to be sore.

Ok so, yesterday she acted pretty sore in her back end when I was watching her trot - took her to the vet this morning and of course she seemed much better. Her right hock was more sore than it should of been when flexed (had hocks injected in December), and her back/hip area was also more sore than it should have been comparative to her workload. She also seemed a little sensitive on her ulcer points, but she was just recently treated for those as well (She is not skinny by any means so ulcers don't seem plausible, yet she is very ulcer prone - cribber). Basically the vet said she was sore/tight all over and that shouldn't really be the case with how little she is working. So we went ahead and injected her right hock - he had a hard time getting the medicine into the joint, and i already forgot what he said that means - and pretty much said that we will see how she responds to that and go from there.

He suggested Animal Element Detox because he had a client who had a horse with similar soreness issues who started that and then got better afterwards. I am willing to try that but I would like to know more options before I go with it! My research isn't doing me very well.

I feel that maybe she could benefit from some BOT products (I only have quick wraps and bell boots right now), but then again I am a poor college student and I need to be choosy on where my money goes!

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to help her with the soreness? Anything I need to be weary of? I read on another thread that sometimes they seem sore in the hocks when there is actually something happening in the suspensory.

Did you x-ray that hock?

I have BOT hock wraps and absolutely love them, I've heard great things about PHT magnetics as well but have never tried them.

Have you tried chiro or massage?

Good luck with your mare, lameness/ soreness can be so frustrating!

As an afterthought, do you know what was causing the alley issues?

No we didnt x ray. i think my vet tries to save me money anywhere he can because my horses love to visit him and be lame lol.

She was chiroed not too long ago, but i haven't tried massage. I don't know of anyone around here who does that!

And honestly, we never could determine if she hated going in the arena or loved going in the arena. She is a pretty hot headed horse, and my theory was that she just got so dang excited to go in that she forgot how to function. But we never knew, we tried just about everything, and the year off was the last resort.

You shouldn't let a vet inject without xray, what if it is not the hock and is tendon.

What if there is a bone chip impeding joint movement and needs to be removed, you wasted money injecting

Without a proper diagnosis you are wasting time and money

Gosh I know how that feels (horses loving the vet :))
Maybe after she's legged up and in shape she'll have the musculature and strength to hold herself correctly and won't be sore anymore.

Maybe Google pssm and see if her symptoms fit any of that? There was a really informative thread on here about it.

It's definitely worth the money to x-ray before injecting so that you know exactly what you're dealing with.

My quick google search of PSSM tells me that she has no signs of that.

But we did get x Rays in December. If she shows more soreness later I will get another set done.

Find someone with a Magna Wave.  It's amazing how it pulls out soreness.  Makes a difference right away.

One thing I suggest is a good omega three supplement based on a marine source or at least a cup a day of milled flax.

People with arthritis and inflammation do take these supplements and omega three eggs etc are well proven to reduce inflammation but we have recent research Colo State U looking at a good marine based omega three supplement and it was shown to reduce the inflammatory markers in the joints of horses.

When we take green grass and make it into hay it loses a lot of the natural oils and fat and that fat is very high in omega three fatty acids.  That is why grass fed beef is healthy and will not raise cholesterol . Green grass has a high level of the omega three fatty acid found in flax for example.

I used lots of flax and even fish (herring)  oil on my mare during and allergy /hives outbreak and I think it really helped. You could look at the new algae supplements high in omega threes as well.

This is not hokey stuff, the Co article was published in JEVS recently.

I think it would help your horse but may not be the total answer of course.

Needs a total work up I gather.
