Veteran Posts: 129	My horses were done may 6th and are either a week or 2 weeks over due. My farrier has been having a back issue said he would come out this week for sure since I'm running at a 2 day race this weekend. Farrier calls Thursday says he had an MRI on back and basicly he is restricted to very little activity and no work till he has surgery..... So my question is I have a guy that can come out this afternoon friday but my concern is I have never used him what if he trims him to short and makes him sore for this weekend I'm already pre-entered for sat and sun. Or do I just make my rims as he is and do him next week? He isnt to long but I'm afraid his left one may break a piece off or may trip since they are a little long. Just trying to figure out which way is best. Thanks!!!

Buttered Noodles Snacker Posts: 4377 Location: NC	this is a tricky one. Too long would put strain on the tendons, but running on a bad shoe job is bad too. If the farrier has good references maybe you could have him do the job maybe mention ur concern, and buy some Magic Cushion that you could pack their feet with over the weekend to keep them from being sore??? I have never used Magic Cushion but saw its praise on several threads here lately.

I wouldn't go to a race knowing my horses toes are long. it's like an accident waiting to happen. ETA: I feel like I was sounding mean, and I'm not trying to. Veteran Posts: 129	Oh you didn't sound mean at all! My farrier told me to stress very much to the guy not to take to much off and I should be fine. I just don't like change. Last time I went thru heck when switching farriers. I just worry he may cut him to short but I guess honestly that could happen even with regular farrier....

The Advice Guru Posts: 6419	Since the horse is barefoot, IMO the horse is way over due. All the barefoot trimmers in my area and the literature I have read says to trim every 4 weeks not 8. I would get the other farrier out have a discussion with him about what he thinks of the feet and have him trim them. I wouldn't be running a horse who is too long, too much can go wrong

Veteran Posts: 129	Normally all mine get trimmed at 6 weeks. And his feet do not grow that fast at all most of the time it doesn't even look like he needs it at 6 weeks. Looking at the calendar he is at 7 weeks not 8. My other two grow much faster and you can tell they are due at 6 weeks.

A Somebody to Everybody Posts: 41354 Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas	Get this farrier out there to trim and tell him just dont take alot off let him know you are going to a show this weekend and worry about this horse being sore, and in a few weeks you will have him back out there.
