I don't feed them any different than any other horse. More problems are caused by over doing it than by "under doing it".

I feed my normal of whatever I'm feeding the rest til last trimester then I feed ultium growth...i keep em on that til babies are weaned so babies get started on it with momma and I keep my babies on it til yearling year...i feed renew gold to everything else normally.

We just feed free choice hay or pasture and supplement with alfalfa cubes during heavy lactation. I see no reason why all the feed companies want you to cut back on hay and feed broodmares concentrate. It is a waste of time and money to me, just the same as feeding concentrate to non working horses and cutting back on hay to do so. This does require top quality hay with protein content above 14%. Native range pastures usually have good forage if rainfall is enough. In places where it rains quite a bit, fertilization is usually necessary. Green grass or even green hay, doesn't necessarily equal high nutrient content though.

Nothing special until the last trimester.   Good pasture, water and free choice minerals.   Then I add cubes or perinneal peanut hay.
