Ok I have a horse that had an abscess about 3 weeks ago. It busted out of the top of his hoof near the hairline. It left a huge crack and hole. He felt better after it busted out for a few days but then the crack got worse. Took him to the vet this week and vet basically said there isn't any infection or anything but it is going to take a while to grow out. He is super sore! Is there anything I can do to help this grow faster and rid the pain? Does Back on Track bell boots or magnetic boots help with things like this? I have never had an abscess be this bad!

Once it blows out he should not be in pain any more. The crack will grow out and not cause you any problems. He either has another abscess or something else is making him sore, maybe thrush?

Rain, thrush, and abscesses all go together.

Are you sure its not more like a quarter crack that busted out at the hair line? If it is it might need to be wired shut. Otherwise they can be super painful.

I'm really not sure. I've never dealt with a quarter crack before. How do they differ from an abscess?

I agree too that normally the pain goes away after it blows out. Thanks for the advice! I will look into it more!

MagnaCu bells for sure will help, this was a bad overreach right on the hairline so it will affect her hoof also, she lives in her bells!

Google quarter crack and you should come up with lots of images. But they can start right at the coronet band. Normally they do run vertical though. Most of the abcess I have had that popped out at the band are either more round like a hole or they run horizontal. I have never had an abcess that the horse was not sound right after it ruptured. So it was just a thought since yours was still lame. Any pictures?

My ancient gelding had a similar situation about a year ago.  Basically as a  result of where the crack was it was pinching him every step he took.  If this is possibly your horses problem, your farrier can bevel the hoof side of the crack to keep stop the sharp edge from pinching.
