| I am moving to the Charlotte, NC area over the summer and I am planning on taking my horse. Does anyone know of places to board up/around there? Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a farrier? I have googled some boarding barns but they are all hunter jumper/dressage and turned up their nose when I said I had a barrel horse.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you. |

Location: Weatherford, TX | I lived there for 5 years. I boarded at 2 different barns. One was hunter/jumper the other was a dressage barn. Both were super nice, but also very expensive (like 3-4x as much as IN). The people were fantastic too. They were both 30-45 minutes away with no traffic. They both aren't there any longer either.
As as far as barrel races, not a lot within an hour or so of Charlotte. There was more in the Indiana/Ohio area when I was there. We had to drive 3-4 hours to get a decent 15-16 second pen indoor with good footing. Good competition though, especially in the small pens.

| My brother in law is a farrier. I will try to private message you. They also have a barn to board horses as well. |

Not sure how long it has been since you were in NC, because I have to disagree with your response. Charlotte is well situated in NC & not far at all from the South Carolina line, & within an hour to an hour & 1/2 of many nice barrel racing arenas, indoor, outdoor and Rodeo Pens! There are only 2 small pens that come to mind and all the others are anywhere from 15 up to 17 second pens with good ground. Competition is great in all the pens. Most of the time in North Carolina, it is not where to find a barrel race less than 2 hours away, it's choosing which one to pick from, out of all the numerous ones available. Horses in NC & SC probably get less road miles, wear & tear, than most of the other states.

| They've been doing some "No Bull" Barrel races somewhere out in western NC that wouldn't be too far. NBHA State Finals are held out that way somewhere every couple of years.
Jr High Rodeo is bigger out there than central/eastern NC, so maybe pro/amateur rodeos are bigger there too? And the other poster that said Charlotte is close to SC is right, and I think there's a lot down there. |

Location: Weatherford, TX | Sorry...I lived there from 2008 til 2013. There weren't many barrel races within an hour or two around Charlotte at that time. You could go to SC and it would be quicker, but still an hour and a half or so from Charlotte depending on where around Charlotte you were. Then if you got caught in traffic, it could take longer. However, barrel races north or east in the state could take 3-4 hours from Charlotte. They also were not super frequent. Again, I did find pens a couple times a month within an hour or two; maybe an hour and a half as you said. IN and OH had more. Now that I'm in TX, there is no comparison to either place. I don't know if you boarded as the OP wanted, but the boarding was very expensive ($700-850 per month) around Charlotte. I also had to drive much further than I had before. I was lucky that I could afford it and also that I found hunter/jumper and dressage barns that were very friendly to barrel people - wasn't easy. However, I did have to haul to practice. Just my experience.
