Location: louisiana | I'm not new to barrel racing, just looking for helpful tips on starting a roping horse on the barrel pattern. He's 13 and has always been a roper but my friend isn't using him anymore so I'm just having fun I call him my project horse. |

| Teach him that is okay and even important to go right once in a while. |

Location: Louisiana | If I were to take one of my husband's horses, the first thing I would do is work on bend and flex. They can be stiff. Also, I'd do a lot of long trotting to help lengthen their stride.
I'd try to back them off the bit a little bit, I ride a lot lighter than he does.
After I had the "feel" I like, or could live with since it's an older horse, I'd start doing some barrel work.
Being an older horse you can probably go through the steps rather quickly. Just meaning you won't have to take near as much time to season them once they know the pattern. |

| Really, IMO the only thing you need to do to transform a nice roping horse into a nice barrel horse, is instill the lateral movement (or bend/flex like someone previously mentioned) with your feet and hands, if he is rusty or lacking in that area. I've ran into a lot of roping horses who think that rein pressure means stop and feet pressure means go... you just have to show them that they can move side to side with your feet at all speeds, not speeding up just with pressure, and that inside rein pressure means to move laterally, not stop.
Once I can get them to do this off the pattern, then I go to just patterning them like a normal prospect. They will pick the pattern up super quick already knowing how to place their feet and not having to deal with the "silly colt stuff." |

| Firstly, this should be easier since roping hoses usually have a great foundation. I took my horse from my husband (who roped on him). I literally just started walking the pattern, then trotting, then loping and so on.
There is a local girl here that heads. Her horse is like 10-13. She decided she wanted to run barrels. She took him around the pattern as her warm up routine everytime she was preparing to rope at home. She hauls this sucker to the first ammy rodeo she entered him in and won 2nd!! Hows that! lol. |

Back when I was running youth rodeos, there was a boy my age that did timed events for all around points. He did everything on his head horse. I kid you not he was a 20sec pole horse. He whooped us every rodeo lol. We were all glad when we started HS rodeoing that boys couldn't run |
