Opinions? Pros? Cons? Advice?
I think it depends a lot on the horse, and what their mind is capable of handling as a 4 yr old. If they don't feel ready, hold them for another year and keep hauling.

Location: Montana | Whiteboy - 2016-08-30 10:59 AM Is there more money available at the 4 yo Fut? Up here, 4 and 5 y/o futurities are they same money, same futurity, just people decide if they would rather run them as a 4 y/o or a 5 y/o.
Thanks for the link, gunner07. :)

Location: MD | That would largely depend on the individual and how seriously you plan to campaign them. No point in blowing the mind of a fragile 3 yr old to get them ready if you're not planning to run the Juvi, Ft Smith and the few others reserved for 4 yr olds only and have the option of running them as a 5 yr old. |

Location: Pacific Northwest | I think up here all the futurities are for 5 year olds. What I've seen most people do is they prep them for the futurity and just decide along the way...if at some point they feel like the horse can't handle it, they back off. This could mean they never even make it to their first race, or they only get a few races in before they feel like the horse isn't handling it well and they back off. Your horse will let you know. |

Location: WI | I personally was torn on this with my now 3yr old. I feel she would be ready to futurity as a 4yr old next year, but someone once told me, "If they make a good 4yr old, they will make a great 5yr old". Personally I want mine to be solid and "consistent" for her futurity year if I am going to invest the money so I am planning to wait and just continue to haul her along and exhibition. It truly does depend on the horse though! |
