It has been close to 20 years since I have entered. How do you know the difference in attire for barrel races? Sometimes people have to wear long sleeves and hats, and other times, it is not a requirement for either. What's the difference?

I am embarassed to ask, but I dont want to be caught without a hat and western shirt at a race, if needed.

Most producers will tell you. If its "western attire" than I'd go with the collared, traditional western shirt and hat or helmet. If its just long sleeve and hat than I'll wear a long sleeve T and vest or something along those lines.

And don't be embarrased to ask. I'd rather ask than get DQ'd.

Yep, just ask if there is a dress code.

Always put a long sleeved collared shirt and hat in the trailer and then ask about the dress code when you enter! Every event is different. Most producers will put it on the show bill. Of course, rodeos are "western attire"!

Thanks everyone. I'll definitely pack them in case I ever need them.

This ^^^ I always carry extra clothes in my trailer, so I would be prepared for what I ever needed and had extra t-shirts so I could change into comfy clothes when I got my runs done., around here you get really sweaty and sticky and need the extra clothes.

Sean and I went to a cutting show for the weekend to watch one of my closest friends. We had just bought Lynn (our "catfish" horse) and decided to take him just for the experience, to get him out and about around activity and other horses. We had no idea that you weren't allowed in the covered area without proper attire---Sean had to borrow Beck's pink "lady" shirt! Y'all, he's 6.2 and was about 270 at the time---that shirt was stuffed and puffed!!!! Hey, but he got to ride in the arena with some of the best cutting trainers in the world, so while I laughed (behind my hand of course), I was real jealous

Edited cause I had Sean as Too Tall Jones!!!!

The girl who keeps her horse at my place, and who has now become a barrel racer (blames me for 'dragging' her into it), came from the cutting world.  For the first year I had to dress her down, literally, when we headed to the small district shows.  She was so used to having to be properly attired to even be in the barn area or warm up, or anywhere!  She has now relaxed into the less stressed dress codes of smaller barrel shows.  She is neat and tidy at the big shows still tho!

You can always tell her that ultimately you're helping her save money on her wardrobe!!! You bad friend for dragging her into another horse discipline---shame
