| I have a top 1D 19 year old mare that was recently diagnosed with kissing spines... the vet said she had 5 vertebrae touching... I know this is terribly painful, but he seemed to think surgery at this age would be hard to recover from and take away from her last year or two... she has so much heart you would never know she was hurting... what I am wanting to know is things I could do to help her not hurt so bad? Sheβs not really back sore when you push or rub down her back until you get to almost where her croup area is (most vets tell me sheβs out in her hips) but now I know it has been the kissing spine all along... she also limps the first several steps after I tighten the saddle... I hate so much that she is in pain! Please tell me some ways I can help her other than the surgery! |

Location: Oklahoma | have you tried injections? I would talk and send xrays to specialist in this area. Good luck! Dr. Hornas was super nice and did a phone consultation with me after I sent xrays on my horse he is 6 hrs from me so that helped a lot! |

| We have a 13 year old rope horse that was diagnosed last year and injections have worked beautifully for him. His are also back a ways and in front of his hips. They used a corticosteroid and vitamin C to add fluid and help build space. Heβs a totally different horse now. We injected last August and heβs still working great today, although heβs had the winter mostly off. We are curious to see how long they last for him. |

Location: Texas! | My gelding was 13 when he had 6 vertebrae operated on and recovered beautifully. Injections did NOT help him. I think it just depends on how the rest of his health is and if you feel like it's going to give him a better quality of life. |

 Not Afraid to Work

| I did Mesotherapy right after my gelding was diagnosed, helped him tremendously. Especially if you want to go with the physical therapy type rehab because it will give you a window of time where her back can actually work (they spend a lot of time protecting it and its hard to break through effectively). I spend an entire summer 5-6x a week doing back strengthening exercises. I got connected with one of the best dressage trainers I knew and educated myself beyond what I already knew and we were able to strengthen him up enough. Knock on wood, hes doing great but he was also "minor" and I believe had some soft tissue damage also.
I also keep him warm/dry and he gets regular massage. Sore no more on hard workout days. Shoo fly leggins so hes not stomping all the time. |

My daughter just helped a girl bring back a kissing spine horse through exercise, lots of dressage type work, long and low training getting the back strong. It took a year, the mare is 14, was very lame at times. They just started back running and she is back to hitting the 1D. We also have her in a very short skirted saddle to stay off the area effected, it has spine relief and so does the saddle pad. I was pretty amazed she made it back to the arena. |
