What are your thoughts on horses that yawn a lot?  My understanding is that it is them releasing tension, so that's a good thing... but what would you think if your horse yawns many times during the saddling process?

Both of mine will do it (one more than the other).  But he yawns more with saddling than when I put his PHT on him.

Thoughts?

I have been told possibly a sign of ulcers. However I have never verified the validity of that.

Ok thanks! I'll research more about that.

I just started treating one for ulcers, so I will see if her yawning decreases.  If so, I'll treat my very yawny gelding too.

Thanks again.

If you go to Instagram and look up @thewillingequine, Adele has several posts about this. So does @pantherflows who is very science based.

I have always been told that it is a release of tension, the same as licking and chewing.
However, when I started getting in to training obedience dogs, the last thing you want to see is your dog yawning in the ring. Its a sign of stress and tension.
Not sure why its seen as a good thing in horses and a bad thing in dogs, but I've been thinking on it for a while now.

I have a real nervous and sensitive mare who "yawns." When we first got her about three years ago, she was doing it constantly. We knew it was from tension and went real slow and easy with her. She learned this is a safe, quiet, happy place. Texas Tornado mentioned ulcers. We believe she has ulcers. She had a couple of mild colics when we first got her. We treated her for ulcers and now she's on a maintenance program. She started yawning less and less. She only does it now if she's upset about something; sometimes when the vet comes, etc. I kind of like it that she does it because she's telling me something is bothering her and so it's easy to read her. Check out physical issues and saddle fit.

My horse was yawning a lot! I started her on neighlox, then she stopped. I at one point stopped the neighlox and she started yawning again. I've never had her scoped, but she definitely think its gastric related for her at least.

Thanks so much everyone! I think I'm going to go ahead with ulcer treatment.

He's just now returned to work after a year of recovering from injury and confinment.  It was rough, nearly had to put him down, and really hard on him emotionally.

Good luck with him after that terrible situation
