I have a mare that needs to run on lasix but she is BAD with shots. I raised this mare and from day 1 she has never been a fan of getting poked. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for getting her to stand still? Giving it IV is basically out of the question because she throws her head up as soon as you hit the vein so IM will have to do. It takes longer but it does get in her system.

i'd give it oral before IM
but I would just stick her on the move if I had to
I tried oral once last year and she never urinated, so I can only assume it never got in her system. She's pretty resiliant and knows how to avoid the needle. In general she is pretty well behaved but she turns into a different horse when a needle comes out. It's obviously all mental, I'm just trying to come up with a solution to help her phobia and make my life easier.
Twitching the neck while in a stall usually gets them to stand for a needle prick
I would work with her a couple times a day. Not necessarily putting the needle in but more of let her think that is what you were going to do. Just mess around with her neck like you are getting ready to give it. Persistence could pay off.
Anytime I give a shot I pat/rub the area really well, sometimes I take the needle off the syringe and stick the needle in then attach the syringe . I have never had a horse react to giving them a shot, had a few friends that would just jab their poor horses and of course after being jabed a few times they would start having trouble giving their horse a shot. I always let my horses know when they are about to get a shot, never twitch any of them. I just perpare them. When they are young are if I get a new horse I just kinda gently start poking and rubbing them in the areas I give shots while I groom. My horses have always been easy/calm when I gave them a shot. Sometimes if your needle is to thick it can cause a horse to shy away.
I ALWAYS tap the injection area AT LEAST ten (10) times prior to the needle prick. This technique is worked on numerous animals for years!
