illlookup - 2013-11-19 10:20 AM I didn't realize there were some who hated Cummins motors so much. I sold my 2006 a couple years ago for almost $26K! Way WAY over what it blue booked for and it was an awesome truck. I admit I loved the interiors of a Chev or GMC until I bought this Laramie Limited Edition. I had an older Chev dually diesel that was the prettiest truck in town but the hills in north east Texas saw me going maxed out at 50-55 when I was loaded down & I got tired (& embarrassed haha) of being passed by Cummins. I realize they are probably leaps & bounds better now though! I hope you find your truck and it has a great resale some day in the future!

I don't hate Cummins. It's a great engine, and they obviously something going with the inline motor design. I just don't think Dodge can build a truck around it, so I take my money elsewhere.

I don't think anyone really hates Cummins. I don't. My grandpa was a diesel mechanic for Cummins for 35 years. =

It's everything else that I don't like. LOL

I only hope this one I'm driving is as good as my last one...I want it to last til I'm 70 so nobody will run granny over! Definitely strengths & weakenesses in them all, and those even change year to year. You mention body around the motor....back in the 70s the complaint about Dodges were the doors would fall off..haha Have fun and happy motoring...truck shopping is one of my favorite things to do!

IMO you will always have the dodge, ford, chevy haters!  When we bought our first diesel my better half talked to a ton of diesel mechanics and not those at the dealerships either.  Every one of them said if you buy used see what you can find for maintenance records.  Fuel filters changed regularly, oil changed, tranny flushes etc.  You would be surprised how many people ignore minimum maintenance.  (for example there are 2 filters on our truck, most service reports we looked at only replaced the topside filter) We ended up buying a 2004 1 ton 6.0 (gasp)  We had records of every oil change and that both fuel filters were replaced when needed, it also had already had the egr work done that was the original issue with the 6.0.  We have the leather interior/heated seats 4X4 package, we did buy the extended warranty just because of the bad rap the 6.0 has.  (we have new front hubs thanks to the warranty) We use supplement in every tank of fuel and keep up with the maintenance, it has been a wonderful truck,  rides wonderfully, I would drive it every day if it wasn't the 4 door long box, takes a parking lot to turn it around in :) If you don't want to keep up with the maintenance don't buy a diesel!

there are bad apples in all brands since the new emissions roll out several years ago. I can let my older cummins idle for 30 minutes with the only detriment being that i burned a $10 bill. the new ones arent supposed to idle for very long at all.

I love these stories.

Please keep telling them.

Someone tell me how they are getting 24+ mpg and they have 700,000 miles and have never changed the oil.

I leave all the mechanic business up to the hubs so I don't know much of anything about ours, but it is an '08 Chevy Duramax with about 55K miles on it. I love how smooth she rides and pulls. Plus she isn't too bad on the eyes...

I love our truck!

Also, I have personally owned Dodges and Fords too. Some older, some brand new. None of them compare to the Chevy...

These threads always crack me up.  Pickups and farriers....everyone thinks theirs is the best.
I like them all for different reasons.

always drive down hill/down wind, replace your instrument cluster from a taxi, and get someone else to change your oil

I am still waiting for someone to build me a pickup with a Cummins engine (manual), with a GM body on a GM or Ford chassis with a either a Ford or Chevy interior. If I wanted automatic I would go with a Duramax with the Allison transmission. The older models do get better mileage. My 2005 GMC gets 16 or so driving back and forth to work (yes it's my daily commuter and I love it, husband hates that part of it) and 20-22 mpg on the highway not pulling. Pulling a fully loaded 2-horse trailer it drops to about 14 mpg if I am only driving on flat roads. Lots of hills and it's 12-13 mpg. Your mileage also depends on the speed you drive. On the highways mine gets its optimal mileage at 60 mph and 22 mpg, at 65-70 mph the mileage drops to 18-19 mpg. There is a reason Dodge's are cheaper, the Cummins engine is a beast but the chassis, frame, and body are not near as well built (in my opinion) as that of the Fords and GM models.  But I have friends who are die-hard Dodge fans and won't touch my GMC and Duramax with a 10-foot pole.  I love the comfort, smooth ride, looks, and last but not least pulling power of the Duramax.  Good luck shopping, car dealerships are always so much fun!

I know you probably think this is a big fat lie (I mean story) but I promise and cross my heart on a long highway drive my 2006 got 21-22 mpg empty and pulling a 10' lq it got 12-16. My new one gets a tad over16 hwy empty. I was pretty disappointed. It's only fot 10,000 miles on it. Question, I didn't know you shouldn't idle the new ones... what year truck did that advice pertain to...why?? The emission stuff?

Short idles won't hurt them especially if you turn on high idle

The new DEF engines are not as sensitive as the DPF ones. On the DPF engines you can't keep head temps high enough to keep from dumping fuel in the DPF and it will clog.

Good info, thanks but how do you turn the high idle on? I let mine idle for 45 minutes a pop during lunch 4 days a week. Hope I haven't damaged anything.

Thanks to those that read the op and gave me relevant info lol....  I learned an interesting nugget today..... if you accidentally put DEF in the fuel tank of your 2013 power stroke it will cost you a 10k engine rebuild.... if you have good insurance it will cover it
