I have a paint mare that I picked up last year from a friend.  Until this fall I had not really ridden her very hard.  A month ago I rode her pretty hard for a few days in a row.  The last day I was ridding her she started to get a little sore when going down hills.  The next day she got puffy in her withers and sore when I pressed on them.  I figured she was just a little sore and some time off would solve that.  Now a month later, she is still tender but not as puffy.  So my question... Could a vet do anything for this or  should I just give her a little more time off?

The previous owner dealt with this in the past, but at the time I never really thought anything of it.  The previous owner passed away, so I am unable to ask him what he did for it.

I would want an X-ray to ensure no arthritis or bony damage. She may have any healed fracture of the vertebrae.

You saddle may not fit, I would want to rule out both

Definitely check the saddle. The cartilage at the top of the scapula has probably been damaged. When a saddle is resting on the scapula or slides up on it when going downhill it can easily injure that area.

So...what does that mean going forward if that is the case?

Shock wave may be able to help heal, if that is the case.

No never.  While this was a friends horse prior to me purchasing it.  It was a very close friend and I have known the horse for 10 years.

Had a mare flip twice with a saddle and me on her and it tore her up....well, and my crap.
Could it be saddle shoving forward while going downhill (?

Tell me about shock wave.
Basically, in a short description, it is sound waves sent through the body that promote circulation and healing.  You can google it for a more in depth description.  We used it a lot on horses with soft tissue, high ringbone, kissing spines, spurs on the atlas/axis joint (at the poll).. it is a good treatment for lots of things, to promote healing.

It probably was just that.  We were in some pretty wicked country.   She is one of those that can cover the ground really effortlessly, so I probably just over did it with her.  I do worry about the withers hitting the saddle on her though, she is a little thin withered and there isn't much clearance.  Gosh I hope I didn't do any permanant damage.

I agree with this...you need to make sure that she didn't break something in there. It may be something the previous owner didn't know about, they can break their withers just rolling in the pasture.

I am almost 1/8 th done with vet school. LOL. I would have a vet look at the horse. They can ultrasound the withers and see if there's edema, and if they have a thermography camera they can look at your saddle fit.

Shockwave is fairly expensive from what I remember and it takes I believe a series of at least three treatments to get the full benefit of it.

I would bet your saddle rubbed her withers. if you do not have a saddle with a higher gullet you will need to pad her up.  it will take a few more weeks and hopefully there is not permanant damage done.  it happens. I would not ride her until she can take pressure again.
